St. Mark’s Hosts Debate Tournament

More than 300 students from 30+ states visited campus this past weekend to compete in the Heart of Texas Invitational. This annual debate tournament is one of the largest and most competitive tournaments in the nation and is attended by college recruiters nationwide. Over 110 public and private schools participated in the tournament. The policy debate division was won by Andrew Packer and Ben Spomer (Greenhill School), who defeated the number one ranked team in the country, Andrew Jones and Hemanth Sanjeev, from Stratford Academy (GA). Travis Chen from Palo Alto High School (CA) won the Lincoln-Douglas debate division.

This year, in conjunction with the George W. Bush Institute, Southern Methodist University debate, and the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance, the Heart of Texas Invitational offered a new event: the Bush Institute Economy Debates (BIED). In order to inspire more students to investigate the intricacies of economic growth, the BIED was designed to encourage wide participation from the different events we offer. The Bush Institute Economic Debate portion of the tournament utilized an impromptu hybrid format, with a question relating to economic growth and markets. Judges included nonprofessionals in order to afford debaters a chance to practice their skills in a real-world format.

Coached by Tim Mahoney, the St. Mark’s debaters act as hosts for the Invitational. St. Mark’s has won three national debate tournament titles.
