Lion Sports Update 01/22

Swim
The varsity swim team swam in two meets last week. On Tuesday, the team traveled to Highland Park to take on two strong UIL teams. Competing without diving points, the Lions posted a victory against Jesuit (100-78) and a narrow loss to Highland Park (87-89). Then on Friday, the team swam at Greenhill. In an all-around strong performance, the Lions won 8 out of the 11 events, including all three relays, and defeated Greenhill by a score of 117-53. This Thursday the Lions host Cistercian at 5:45 p.m.

Soccer
The varsity soccer team began SPC North Zone competition this past week and gave a good account of themselves with a draw and a victory while playing at two venues that traditionally prove challenging for the Lions: Greenhill and Ft. Worth Country Day. On Tuesday, the Lions spotted the Hornets two goals in the first 20 minutes before playing perhaps its best soccer of the season, earning a draw with goals from both senior captains, Seth Weprin and Lyle Ochs. The momentum of the match turned in favor of the Lions during the latter minutes of the first half, turning the game into a lively, entertaining affair. While the match was a testament to strong team play, standout performances from seniors Blake Rogers and Jack Rocchio, juniors Colin Campbell, Reid Goldsmith, and William Holtby, and sophomore Eric Yoo greatly advanced the Lion cause. St. Mark’s followed up its strong performance at Greenhill with a very good start at Ft. Worth Country Day. Continually pressing the Falcons from the initial whistle, the Lions were able to maintain possession in their opponent’s half for long stretches. Junior William Holtby opened the scoring from sophomore Henry McElhaney’s service in the eighteenth minute and then followed up with an assist on senior Seth Weprin’s goal within ninety seconds. Ten Minutes later, Holtby again turned provider for sophomore Knobel Hunt and the Lions seemed to be in charge with a three-goal lead at halftime. The well-coached Falcons proved to be resilient, withstanding early second-half pressure from the Lions before turning the tables with effective counter-attack play that saw them come within a goal of a draw. The Lions were able to hold on to earn all three points and draw level with Cistercian for first place in the SPC North Zone. The Lions host John Paull II on Senior Night on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd. Seniors Emmett Berger, Mateo Guevara, William Haga, Shane Ndeda, Lyle Ochs, Jack Rocchio, Blake Rogers, and Seth Weprin will be honored at 5:30 p.m. prior to the game.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team took to the road for two SPC counter contests this past week. At Greenhill on Tuesday, January 15, the Lions jumped out to an early lead. Despite four St. Mark’s players scoring in double figures (Colin Smith-16, Noah Shelby-15, Andrew Laczkowski-14, & Harrison Ingram-13), the score remained close heading into the 4th quarter. At that point, senior captain, Austin Nadalini, employed his veteran savvy like never before to spearhead the Lions’ offense. Four of Nadalini's team-high 8 assists came in the 4th quarter, as St. Mark's pulled away for a 64-45 win. On Friday, the Marksmen traveled to Ft. Worth Country Day, whose team was determined to slow the pace dramatically. In the first half, Colin Smith's 10 points and Andrew Laczkowski's 8 points & 7 rebounds enabled the Lions to take a 27-16 lead into the locker room. Sophomore Jake Laufenberg had one of his strongest games of the year, providing a defensive spark that ultimately helped extend the lead to 19 midway through the fourth quarter as the Lions cruised to victory (49-39). The Lions have 3 home games this week: Tuesday, 1/22 at 7:30 p.m. vs Prestonwood; Friday, 1/25 at 7:30 p.m. vs Trinity Valley (SPC counter); and Saturday, 1/26 at 1:00 p.m. vs Casady (SPC counter).

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team competed in the Prep State Dual Tournament hosted by St. John’s High School on Saturday, January 19. This tournament hosted the best SPC and TAPPs wrestling teams in Texas. St. Mark’s placed 6th out of 11 schools. The team highlight was beating Episcopal High School of Houston 45 to 34, and Dallas’ Trinity Christian Academy 46 to 28; however, the loss to Liberty Christian in the 5th through 8th place pool solidified our 6th place standing. For the Lions, this is two places ahead of 2018 results, a step in the right direction. St. Mark’s will compete in the 3nd Annual Bowie Invitational at Bowie High School in Arlington on Friday and Saturday, January 25 & 26. Just around the corner, St. Mark’s will be hosting the Private School State Tournament on February 2nd, 2019. The top three wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
