All former wrestlers are invited to the Championship Round and the 50th Anniversary Reception.

Soccer
The varsity soccer team hosted SPC rival ESD last Tuesday. Down 0-1 at halftime, the Lions started the second half aggressively and were rewarded when sophomore Knobel Hunt scored from close range, benefitting from the combination play of sophomore Eric Yoo and junior William Holtby. Twenty minutes later, Hunt added a second goal. Junior Colin Campbell sealed the victory with a full volley strike in the seventy-third minute. Strong goalkeeping from junior Billy Lockhart and solid defensive play from junior Ben Hao and senior Jack Rocchio kept the Eagles in check throughout the second half resulting in a 3-1 Lions victory. Then, on a blustery Friday evening, the Lions played SPC rival Greenhill on a soft, soggy pitch. The less than ideal conditions made it difficult for either team to consistently possess the ball. The Hornets opened the scoring midway through the first half and later added a second goal. Fourteen minutes from full time, the Lions took advantage of a set piece opportunity. Senior Jack Rocchio headed sophomore Henry McElhaney’s driven free kick, beating the Hornet keeper who had come off his line. The ball crossed the goal and dropped at the foot of onrushing sophomore Knobel Hunt who emphatically finished. With new newfound momentum, the Lions pressed for the equalizer, but the Hornets were up to the task. The game was resulted in the Lions third loss of the season. Both games were “friendlies” against SPC opponents. This week, the Lions travel to Trinity Christian on Wednesday, host HSAA on Thursday, and then face an always competitive St. Mark’s Alumni team on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team played in a pair of nonconference games against 5A and 6A public schools in the area last week. On Tuesday evening, the Lions hosted Sunset High School. Junior Andrew Laczkowski scored nearly 20 points in the first quarter alone, finishing with a game high 29 pts. Every Marksman scored on the way to a 25 point victory. On Friday night, 2018 61 State Champion Allen High School came to Hicks Gym. The Lions trailed early, but a flurry of scores late in the second quarter that included highlight dunks from freshman Colin Smith and sophomore Harrison Ingram tied the score at 27. The Eagles responded with a short run of their own, and St Mark's trailed by six, 32-38, at halftime. In the second half, three point shooting made the difference. St Mark's went 1-12 in the second half, while their opponent knocked down nine 3's in route to a 87-62 victory. The Lions are now 10-4 on the season and host a 7 pm game Friday night against Gateway Charter School. On Saturday, Dec. 22 at 2 pm, come support the current varsity team and watch Marksman veterans from yesteryear compete in the alumni game. Many current players and alums will then go to SMU to cheer on Jack Gordon ’15 and his Cornell University teammates as they face the SMU Mustangs (7 pm tipoff). Over the holidays, St. Mark's will compete in the DISD Coca-Cola Classic held at various arenas around the DFW metroplex. The event should make for an action-packed finish to what has been a very successful 2018 calendar year!

Swimming
The varsity swim team did not compete last week. Their next meet will be after the break as they travel to Southlake Carroll on January 10th.

Crew
Two Marksmen rowers were invited to participate in the 2018 USRowing Youth Regional Challenge which was held in Sarasota, Florida, on December 13-15th. The Challenge is a part of USRowing’s Olympic Development Program whose objective is to identify talent and challenge participants to greater levels of competition. The competition brought 432 athletes and 36 coaches from USRowing’s 6 regions. The three day event included multiple practices culminating in boat selections, a time trial, and racing finals. Competitors rowed in eights, fours, quads, pairs, doubles and singles. St. Mark’s was fortunate enough to have two student-athletes as part of the representation for the Southeast Region. Christian Duessel ’20 and Billy Lockhart ’20 were members of the St. Mark’s quad that went to Youth Nationals in May 2018 and were invited to attend the Challenge. Christian Duessel bowed a quad finishing third for a Bronze medal and Billy Lockhart rowed in a four finishing in first place for a Gold medal.
