Lessons in Civics and Leadership

In the weeks before the 2018 midterm elections, Marksmen heard from two guest speakers with extensive experience in government.

In October, Kristina Kiik (Hockaday ’02) shared with Upper School students her passion for and experiences with government. Before becoming a commercial litigation attorney, Kristina served as the youngest-ever member of the Electoral College, representing Texas’s 32nd congressional district in the 2004 presidential election. While a student at Hockaday, Kristina also served as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives. She urged Marksmen to become involved with government, both locally and nationally.

Just a few days before the election, Sean Gallagher ’87 returned to campus as the keynote speaker for St. Mark’s Senior Leadership Dinner. Sean spoke with the Class of 2019 about the need to know one’s strengths and weaknesses, the importance of going all-in when pursuing one’s passions, and the unique nature of the St. Mark’s experience and brotherhood. He also visited Upper School history classes during the day and took the opportunity to educate Marksmen on the history of the 2000 presidential election, including the infamous “hanging chad.” That election would end up being resolved by the Supreme Court, at which time Sean was clerking for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Sean currently serves as an intellectual property and patent attorney with Bartlit Beck LLP in Chicago.
