Lion Sports Update 10/08

Football
The varsity football team hosted the Houston Christian Mustangs on Friday night. It was sophomore Matthew Epperson’s first start at QB filling in for an injured Colin Neuhoff. The Lions’ defense was stifling and kept the Mustangs from any sustained drives in the first half. Senior Jonathan Taylor scored the first TD for the Lions on a 1-yard run after John Harbison blocked a punt and gave the Lions great field position. In the second quarter, Epperson accounted for both Lion scores with a 1-yard TD run and a 44-yard TD pass to fellow sophomore Kit Colson. Taylor opened the second half scoring with a great run up the middle of 38-yards. The Mustangs mustered their lone score in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions cruised to a 27-7 victory. The Lions are now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in SPC 4A play. Taylor led the team in rushing, accounting for 128-yards (5.8 yards/attempt) and 2 TDs. Senior Ryan Warner had 118-yards receiving on 5 catches. The Lions travel to Episcopal High School in Houston this Friday night.

Cross Country
The varsity cross country team returned to action after a three-week break due to weather cancelations and ran in the Jesuit XC Fall Classic on Friday morning. This meet was important on two different levels: first, to actually compete again and second, the course is the same one the team will be running on at the SPC Championships in November. The Lions came out hard and never stopped running. Junior Pablo Arroyo led the team with a second place finish overall in a time of 16:18. He was followed closely by senior Seth Weprin in sixth place with a time of 16:31. These are excellent times on arguably the hardest course in Texas. The rest of the team also ran well and the Lions came away with a third-place finish out of 48 schools! The JV team followed suit with Michael Lukowicz finishing second overall and the team finishing third out of 27 teams. This weekend, the team travels to Fort Worth for the Private Schools State preview meet.

Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team had two SPC North Zone counter matches last week. On Tuesday, the team traveled to Trinity Valley to take on the undefeated Trojans. Unfortunately, the Lions were unable to pull off the upset, losing 0-3. On Friday in front of a great crowd, the Lions hosted the Greenhill Hornets. The Lions found their groove early and played their best match of the season, defeating the Hornets 3-0. Big contributions were made by Albert Luo, Lincoln Dales, Tristan Doan, and Daniel Sanchez. This week the Lions host Casady from OKC on Saturday at 11 am.
