Lion Sports Update 10/03

Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team went 2-0 last week in their games. On Tuesday, the Lions traveled to Greenhill. The two teams played an intense match, and the Lions prevailed in the best of 5 matches by a score of 3-2. Then on Friday’s Homecoming game, the Lions hosted Ft. Worth Country Day. The Lions made quick work of the Falcons, winning 3-0. This week, the Lions play two crucial SPC North Zone counter matches. On Tuesday, the Lions travel to Trinity Valley to face a tough Trojan team who they have yet to beat this season. Then on Friday, The Lions host Greenhill in what will likely be a very competitive match.

Fencing
Members of the Lions’ fencing team have competed in several events so far this fall. At the Spruill Memorial Regional Event, sophomore Fritz Hesse finished 21st in the Junior Men’s Epee. At the North Texas Roundup Sectional Youth and Cadet Event, junior Christopher Wangtook finished 5th in the Cadet Men’s Foil, and Hesse finished 39th in the Cadet Men’s Epee. Finally, in the Duel at Dallas, Wang and Hesse again represented the Lions well. Wang took 2nd in the Junior Men’s Epee and 11th in Division 1 Men’s Foil while Hesse finished 17th in the Junior Men’s Epee and 20th in the Division 1 Men’s Epee.

Football
The varsity football team hosted the St. John’s Mavericks in the 2018 Homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 28th. The game’s 1st quarter ended in a 0-0 tie, and at the half, the Mavericks held a slim 0-7 lead. Late the in second quarter, senior quarterback Colin Neuhoff was injured late in the second quarter, and sophomore Matthew Epperson came in to replace him. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the game was still close with St. John’s holding a 0-14 lead. The 4th quarter was where the game got exciting, with the teams combining for 35 points in the final quarter alone. The Lions got on the board when Abe Echt recovered a fumbled PAT and ran 80+ yards for two points. Then Epperson completed his first career TD pass to Jake Yarckin and after another Maverick score, senior running back Jonathan Taylor broke several tackles on his way to a 65-yard TD. While the Lions fell to the Mavericks 16-33, the team fought until the very end and gave the Homecoming crowd a lot to cheer for.

Cross Country
The varsity cross country team was off for the Homecoming weekend and will race again this Friday, at Norbuck Park as part of the Jesuit XC Fall Classic. The races begin at 8:00 a.m.
