Lions Row to Nationals

Over the weekend of June 8, 2018, the varsity crew’s leading quad of  Riley Sanders ’18, Eduardo Ludwig Bernardo ’18, Christian Duessel ’20, and Billy Lockhart ’20, competed in the Youth National Championship regatta in Rancho Cordova, California.

In the first round of competition, St. Mark’s placed 12th in time trials, making them the first seed in the third repechage and allowing them another chance to advance to the finals. There, the Lions finished in second place, sending the quad to the consolation finals. The next day, the Lions rowed valiantly and placed 16th overall in the national tournament.

“We took four guys to the national tournament and two of them were sophomores,” Riley Sanders said. “With the experience from this tournament, they’ll be more than prepared for rowing in tougher tournaments. There is a lot of raw talent coming up these next few years. We’re entering a golden era for crew.”
