Dr. Balog Receives Rogers Award

At the Upper School Final Assembly, the Alumni Association honored Dr. Steve Balog as the 2018 recipient of the Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award. This award recognizes a member of the faculty for their outstanding contributions above and beyond their duties in the classroom.

“A humble man of many talents, Dr. Balog is deeply devoted to his students and to this School. A master teacher in every sense of the word, he inspires boys to think beyond the here and now and stretch themselves in every way possible,” said David W. Dini, Eugene McDermott Headmaster. “He quite simply motivates his students to reach for the stars.”

Dr. Steve Balog joined the St. Mark's faculty twice – first as a substitute teacher in 1990 and then, again, as a full-time science teacher in 1994. During his time at St. Mark’s, he has served as a physics and physical science teacher, a junior/senior class sponsor, a moderator for the role-playing games club, and Director of the Planetarium. As the holder of the Cecil H. And Ida Green Master Teaching Chair in Science, he is constantly sought after for extra help and mentorship.

The three finalists for the Rogers Award, including Steve Balog, Paula Cham, and Clara Ann Norman, were announced at the Spring Alumni Dinner in April.

“Each year, parents, faculty members, and students are invited to nominate a faculty or staff member who has had a meaningful impact on the St. Mark’s community,” said Cory Morrow ’87, Alumni Awards Committee Chair. “The stories the boys recounted for us were truly inspiring. They reminded all of us what a special place St. Mark’s is."

The Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award was established by the St. Mark’s Alumni Association in 1998 to honor faculty and staff for their pioneering contributions to the School community in academic, athletic and extracurricular areas that go above and beyond the confines of their job descriptions, thus extending the boundaries of the learning experience for St. Mark’s students.
