Lion Sports Update 04/26/18

Baseball
The varsity baseball team played at Cistercian last Tuesday in a crucial SPC counter game. Junior center fielder Connor Pierce provided some early inning heroics, throwing a perfect strike to senior catcher Canyon Kyle, who tagged out a sliding baserunner. This proved to be the last serious scoring threat, as senior Reece Rabin no hit the remaining Cistercian batters in an impressive 4-0 complete game shutout. Rabin was named Dallas Morning News Honorable Mention Baseball Player of the Week. Seniors Jimmy Rodriguez (3 hits) and Zach Landry (2 hits) had great offensive days at the plate for the Lions. Building on this momentum, St. Mark’s came out swinging against TACA on Friday. Seniors Zach Landry (3 hits), Reece Rabin (2 hits), and Canyon Kyle (2 hits) drove in early runs while senior designated hitter Calvin Hosler was hit by two pitches, bringing his total to seven hit-by-pitches on the season. Senior right-hander Will Forbes provided 4 2/3 innings of solid work on the mound. Junior Cole Arnett and sophomore Mason Rareshide did fine work in relief, as the Lions cruised to a 10-3 win. St. Mark’s improved to 4-1 in the SPC North Zone and 7-7 overall. The team has two crucial SPC counter games this week. They will host Greenhill on Tuesday afternoon for Senior Appreciation Day and then finish the regular season at division-leading Oakridge on Friday.

Tennis
The varsity tennis team recorded two solid wins last week against Cistercian on April 17th (4-1 score) and ESD on April 20th (5-0 score). The team faced some windy conditions against Cistercian, but everyone came focused and ready for the challenge. Adnan Khan and Kobe Roseman posted quick wins at Line 2 and 3 singles with scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively. The doubles teams of Jack Parolisi/Sid Vattamreddy and Creston Brooks/Rhys Arana also won with scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1. Davis Bailey faced a tough opponent on Line 1 and put up a great battle despite the rough conditions. On Friday, the Lions took advantage of a depleted ESD roster and secured a confident victory. This week, the team will finish a suspended match at home vs. Ft. Worth Country Day on Monday, host Greenhill in an important SPC counter match on Tuesday, host Jesuit on Wednesday in a friendly match, and then travel to Oakridge on Friday for their last SPC match of the season. The Lions currently sit atop the SPC North Zone standings with a 4-0 record and can clinch a 1st round bye at the SPC Tournament this week.

Crew
The varsity and JV crew teams competed in the Texas Rowing Championships this past weekend in Austin, TX. The Varsity Quad (Billy Lockhart, Christian Duessel, Riley Sanders, & Eduardo Ludwig-Bernardo) took the bronze medal, finishing just 3 seconds out of 1st place. The JV Quad of Raymond Jurcak, Chad Kim, Jack Trahan, and Blake Hudspeth qualified for the finals and finished 4th overall. Two of the double boats also qualified for the finals. The JV 2x of Chad Kim and Raymond Jurcak took 5th in the state, while the Varsity Lightweight 2x of Blake Hudspeth and Eduardo Ludwig-Bernardo took 6th in the state. The Lions have one regatta left on the regular season schedule, the Central District Youth Rowing Championships in Oklahoma City, OK on May 4-6.

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team played in the North Texas Regional Championships this past weekend. After winning the region 16 years in a row, our team had to watch a new champion take the title this year. In the first game, the Lions defeated Denton HS, 18-4. In the semifinal game, the team struggled to find its rhythm and lost the game to Denton Guyer by a score of 3-2. In an unusually low scoring game, it took the Lions three and a half quarters to score their first goal. Denton-Guyer managed to score 2 goals in a minute and a half and knot the score at 2-2. With less than one second to go in the game, a Denton-Guyer player pushed the ball into the Lion’s goal for the game winner. Next, the Lions faced Colleyville Heritage HS to earn a spot in the 3rd place game. The Lions prevailed 13-8 and went on to face Southlake Carroll HS in the 3rd place game. Rebounding from the earlier loss, the team rallied to win 11-3 and will represent the North Texas Region as the 3rd seed at the State Championship Tournament on May 3-5.

Golf
Leading up to the SPC Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Woodforest Golf Club in The Woodlands, TX, the varsity golf team plays ESD in match play on Tuesday at Sherrill Park GC and then a coed match with Hockaday on Thursday at Brookhaven Country Club.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team traveled to Austin, TX last weekend to compete in the SPC Tournament. The Lions defeated St. Andrew’s 18-2 in the first round with balanced scoring. Sophomore Colin Campbell led the way with 3 goals and 4 assists. Senior Willie Wood and junior Connor Cheetham added 3 goals each. The Lions had a significant advantage in possession, winning 16 of 23 faceoffs. The Lions beat St. John’s 16-4 in the semifinal game by shutting out the Mavericks 10-0 in the second half. Willie Wood contributed 5 goals, Garrett Mize had 4 goals, Sam Schroeder had 3 goals, and Titus McGowan had 1 goal and 3 assists on the offensive end.  Again, the trio of John Burton, William Hall, and Sunny Agrawal dominated the faceoff X. Senior John Gunnin contributed 11 saves in the winning effort. In the SPC Championship game, the Lions faced ESD. The offense struggled to build momentum in the first half, and the Lions fell to ESD by a score of 10-2. The lacrosse team plays its final regular season game this Thursday at home against Highland Park. The winner will claim the #1 seed in the THSLL North District DI East Division. The playoffs will begin on Tuesday, May 1st and St. Mark’s will host our 1st round game.

The varsity track & field team enjoyed a successful SPC North Zone Meet last Friday at Greenhill School. Senior Daniel Garcia earned “Athlete of the Meet” by securing 45 points.
