Lion Sports Update 03/28/18

Track & Field
The varsity track & field team enjoyed a very successful home meet this past weekend. Competing in the 22nd Annual Bradley V. Urschel Invitational, under ideal conditions, the Lions surged and won the meet. Leading the team was Clay Morris ’18 who won the long jump in a meet record of 22’ 2.5“ and also won the high jump with a jump of 6’ 2” before raising the bar to attempt a PR of 6’ 7” with some close tries. The 4 x 200 relay earned a spot on the ALL-TIME list with their 2nd place finish in 1:31.49. Fausto Reyher ’18 had his best day as a Lion with wins in the 110H PR 15.07 and 300H PR 40.46. Freshman Kit Colson had a very good day running a PR in the 100m of 11.36 and winning the 200m in another PR of 23.04. Sophomores Pablo and Andres Arroyo finished 1-2 in the 1600m. Junior John Harbison had a PR in the Pole Vault of 12’ 6”. He led his teammates Colton Barber ’19 and Dominic Fronc ’19 who both got PRs of 11’ in the vault to finish 3-4 in the standings. Zach Gilstrap ’18 won the shot put as well. All-in-all a very good day for the Lions. This week a small group has qualified for the TEXAS RELAYS and will compete in Austin at the University of Texas on Friday and Saturday.

Tennis
The varsity tennis team had a busy week with three matches. On Wednesday, the Lions played TCA, winning all but one extras singles match. The team was led by junior Adnan Khan, senior Kobe Roseman, junior Rhys Arana in singles, and Arana/Creston Brooks, Matthew Pollock/Emmett Berger, Austin Zhang/Alex Piccagli in doubles. This match gave some of the players not as high on our line up a chance to play and they performed really well. On Friday, the team faced tougher competition against Houston Christian. Singles were led by Harris Wilson, Davis Bailey, and Sid Vattamreddy who played against fierce opponents. In doubles, Matthew Pollock/Jack Parolisi had a tight match but lost in a tough 3rd set, and Adnan Khan/Kobe Roseman pulled off the only win for the team that day. After the match, the Lions, Houston Christian, and Hockaday tennis teams shared a meal in the Great Hall and all appeared to enjoyed the camaraderie. On Saturday, the team faced John Cooper School (The Woodlands). Jack/Matthew and Kobe/Sid won the doubles points comfortably. The singles matches were more challenging, Davis Bailey and Adnan Khan battled hard, but came up short at Lines 1 and 3 singles. Freshman Mark Motlow played an incredible deciding match on Line 2 singles after being sick just a day before. He held a good lead in the final set but couldn't quite close out the match, and the Lions lost the match 2-3. The Lions tennis team displayed great sportsmanship while maintaining a competitive spirit. The players collected some great takeaways from both wins and losses and are gearing up for our first counter match this Thursday at Casady in Oklahoma City.

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team traveled to Houston to play in the Allison Maloney Tournament this past weekend. The team played 4 games on Saturday against some of the strongest teams in the state. In the first game, the Lions cruised past Cy Creek HS, 18 – 0. In the second game they beat Lamar HS, 12 – 1. In the semifinals, the team lost to Flower Mound HS, 6 – 7. To finish the weekend, the Lions won the 3rd place game 5 – 4 against Strake Jesuit HS.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team traveled to Rockwall on Friday night. In a game where the Lion offense spread the ball around to many different scorers, the Lions won 17-7. The Lions will host Greenhill on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

Baseball
The varsity baseball team hosted HSAA last Tuesday. Senior Reece Rabin pitched 5 strong innings, keeping his team in the game despite a couple fielding errors that turned into runs for HSAA. St. Mark’s were unable to come up with timely hits with runners in scoring position when needed, thus falling 3-4. On Wednesday, the Lions headed over to ESD for a “friendly” (non-counter game). Junior Cole Arnett and sophomore Mason Rareshide pitched nine shutout innings with a stout Lions' defense behind them. With the score knotted, 0-0, in the top of the 9th inning, the offense came alive with excellent bunting execution by Juniors Jack Rocchio and Cole Arnett. Junior Connor Pierce scored the game’s first run after getting tangled up with the third baseman in an obstruction call. Seniors Jimmy Rodriguez, Zach Landry, and Reece Rabin all collected RBIs to put the game away, 4-0. On Saturday, St. Mark’s hosted the #2 state-ranked Trinity Christian Academy. Once again, senior ace Reece Rabin pitched a great game, keeping his team in the game during six strong innings of work. Although St. Mark’s crushed two solo home runs, one by junior Daniel Mirochna and the other by senior Jimmy Rodriguez, the pitching staff was unable to keep the game close in the top of the 7th inning as TCA scored 9 times after a series of walks, defensive miscues, and hits scuttled the Lions pitchers, losing the game 2-11. The team will travel to Oklahoma City on Thursday for their first SPC counter game vs. Casady.
