Lions Prepare for SPC

Soccer
Needing victory to secure a bye at the SPC Tournament, the varsity soccer team traveled to Cistercian on an evening that included a 75-minute lightening delay. The Lions struck first when junior captain Seth Weprin’s precise left-footed cross was redirected by hard-charging freshman Kit Colson. The Hawks found the equalizer less than a minute into the second half. Both teams would produce chances in the closing 25 minutes and the Lions left feeling a bit unlucky with a draw. Senior captain Cal Rushton had a standout performance in preserving the draw, which eventually proved to be enough to secure the second seed at the SPC Tournament. Senior Night honored Matt Power, Owen Berger, Cal Rushton, Kabeer Singh, and Arjun Singh. A scoreless first half gave little indication of what was to come when freshman Knobel Hunt opened the scoring with an assist from Arjun Singh who then double the marker when he scored from junior Jake Yarkin’s assist. Junior Mateo Guevara would add two more goals on assists from sophomore Colin Campbell and Matt Power. Campbell would eventually record a hat trick of assists when his crosses lead to two more goals by freshman Kit Colson and junior Jack Rocchio. The 6-2 final score earned the Lions a positive goal difference for the first time all season. St. Mark’s will take on the winner of Ft. Worth Country Day and St. John’s at the SPC Tournament after earning a first round bye as the second seed from the North Zone.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team competed in two games this past week. On Tuesday night, the Lions wrapped up SPC North Zone play at Cistercian. The pace was slow early on, but the Lions opened up a double-digit lead heading into half time thanks to some stellar second quarter three point shooting and a host of hustle plays the generated a number of extra possessions. The Lions cruised to a 20-point win to finish conference play with a 6-1 record, strong enough to earn the number one seed heading into the SPC tournament. Friday night was senior night, and six near-graduates - Garrett Mize, Reece Rabin, Omar Rana, Jimmy Rodriguez, Sam Sussman, and Jesse Zhong - were all honored at halftime for their rich contributions to the program over the last six years. Each of the seniors scored, and three of the veterans finished in double figures to spur the Marksmen to a win over TACA. The SPC tournament begins Thursday at EHS in Houston. St. Mark's has a bye in the first round and will play the winner of St. John's & Oakridge at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

Swim
Last Thursday night the varsity swim team honored the 12 Seniors in the program. It was a wonderful show of spirit and brotherhood, culminating with the last swim event. The 4 X 100 Freestyle relay was electrifying, all 12 Seniors swimming that event while the rest of the team cheered them on. Our honored Seniors are: Ben Hurst, Cooper Johnson, Daniel Byeon, Alan Jiang, Andrew Li, Michael Liang, Ryan Norman, Ethan Pittson, Edward Ro, Cal Rothkrug, Kannan Sharma, and Niteesh Vemuri. The Lions will be competing in the SPC Championships at the Conroe ISD Natatorium on Saturday.

Wrestling
The wrestling team did not have a meet last week. They will traveling to Houston this weekend to compete in the SPC Championships on Saturday hosted by St. John’s School.
