Fighting Hunger with Art

St. Mark’s ceramicists are doing their part to help end hunger in the Dallas area. The advanced students in Scott Ziegler’s ceramics class threw dozens of bowls to donate to the North Texas Food Bank’s Empty Bowls fundraiser. Empty Bowls is an annual event where guests sample bowl-friendly fare from local restaurants and take home a handmade artisan bowl, like the ones provided by these St. Mark’s students.

In addition to providing great practice, Mr. Ziegler sees this project as a key element of his Marksmen’s education. “I believe it’s important for students, as artists, to realize the value of giving back to their community. It was amazing to see students fully embrace the Empty Bowls project, and I’m looking forward to making this an annual occurrence.”

The 19th Annual Empty Bowls event, to be held on March 2, 2018, will bring together Dallas chefs and restaurants, potters, community partners, and donors to help raise funds for North Texans in need. Each attendee will sample soups and other delicious bowl-friendly fare and have an opportunity to take home a handcrafted bowl created by Texas artists, including St. Mark’s ceramicists.
