Lion Sports Update 02/06
Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team competed in the Texas Prep State Wrestling Championship hosted by Episcopal High School in Houston this past Saturday, February 3. There were 26 wrestling teams comprised of SPC and TAPPs teams from the State of Texas and Oklahoma. The Lions placed 10th as a team. The top three in each weight class qualify the coveted Prep Nationals Wrestling tournament at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Senior captain Tucker Ribman (138lbs) continued his undefeated run in Texas and won his second straight state championship with a score of 12 to 5 against a tough opponent from Bishop Lynch High School. The team will compete at St. John’s High School in Houston for the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championship on Saturday, February 17.
Basketball
The varsity basketball team competed in two games last week. On Tuesday, St. Mark’s hosted Oakridge with a 1st-round SPC tournament bye potentially at stake. The Lions came out on fire and forged an immediate 20-3 lead, thanks in part to 8 first-half 3-point makes (5 by Andrew Laczkowski, who scored 21 points in the first 16 minutes!). However, several unforced errors enabled Oakridge to respond with a 20-4 run of their own that nearly evened the score. Luckily, it was all SM from there. Juniors Austin Nadalini (9 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists) and Dylan Osimetha (8 points) turned in strong performances, as did seniors Omar Rana and Sam Sussman (combined for 15 points and 7 rebounds in the 2nd half) and the Lions won 83-53. On Friday, the Lions hosted HSAA. Long-time coaching legend, Tom Adams, was honored before the game. A number of alums returned to Hicks Gym to celebrate Coach Adams, who will retire from basketball coaching at the conclusion of this season. The players responded with an inspired first half in which they outscored their opponent 19-11 in both quarters en route to a 77-62 victory. Freshman Harrison Ingram led all scorers with 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 blocks. Laczkowski scored 25 – his 7th straight game with at least 22. The Marksmen have now won 10 of their last 11 games and finish SPC North Zone play at Cistercian tomorrow. Senior night on Friday will begin at 7:30 p.m., so be sure to support the class of 2018 in their final regular-season game donning the blue and gold.

In their only match of the week, the varsity soccer team continued to push for a first round bye at the SPC tournament by eking out a 1-0 shutout of the surging Oakridge Owls. The match was closer than the score line would indicate as St. Mark’s was fortunate not to concede twice in the final four minutes, despite enjoying the of the run of play for the majority of the match. The Lion’s defense survived several forays by the burgeoning Owls’ offense as junior Lyle Ochs distinguished himself by demonstrating impeccable timing in constantly dispossessing the most creative of Oakridge players. In goal, sophomore Billy Lockhart preserved the shutout, the third clean sheet the Lions have earned during the counter season. A confluence of man and moment occurred in the 54th minute when senior Arjun Singh took freshman Eric Yoo’s pass on the right flank just beyond the Owls’ penalty area. Singh gracefully glided to his right along the edge of the penalty area, avoiding would-be tacklers, until he saw an opening when he was level with the near post. His well-timed strike rose decisively over the outstretched arms of the Oakridge keeper and nestled under the crossbar for the only goal of the match. St. Mark’s must now travel to Cistercian where success has been hard to achieve. Nevertheless, a win in the final counter match would mean a bye for the Lions at the SPC tournament. A Thursday evening match at home (7:30 p.m.) with HSAA honors this year’s seniors as the regular season concludes.

The varsity swim team did not compete last week. They will host Ft. Worth Country Day and All Saints on SENIOR NIGHT this Thursday at 5:45 p.m. in the Rogers Natatorium.
