Model UN Team Earns Honors

In just its second year, St. Mark's Model United Nations team earned numerous honors at the Baylor University Model United Nations Conference earlier this month. The team earned a "Most Outstanding Team" division plaque, and three Marksmen distinguished themselves for special "committee" awards:
  • Jackson Singhal ’20 – Outstanding Delegate (North Korea)
  • Ned Tagtmeier ’21 – Outstanding Delegate (North Korea)
  • Matthew Schopmeyer ’21– Honorable Mention Delegate (North Korea)

“The goal of these conferences is to foster diplomacy and cooperation as students write resolutions and reports, just as Member States in the UN do,” said David Fisher, St. Mark’s History Department Chair and Model UN Sponsor. “While the educational experience is the true reward of any Model UN event, at many conferences awards are given to teams and individual students who excel at adhering to the constraints of domestic and international politics, public speaking, and leadership within their committee.”

The Model United Nations allows students to learn about diplomacy, international relations, and communications by stepping into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. The simulations are modeled after the United Nations General Assembly. The St. Mark’s Model UN Club, lead this year by Mohit Singh ’18, encourages any Upper School Marksmen interested in foreign affairs, diplomacy, public speaking, or journalism to try out for a delegation assignment.
