School Mourns Loss of Thelma Levells

St. Mark’s mourns the loss of beloved cafeteria worker Thelma Levells, who passed away on September 23, 2017. Thelma joined St. Mark’s in 1972 and quickly became known for her dedication to our community and her exceptional baking skills. “Thelma was a kind person who loved the boys,” said former Director of Food Services and longtime friend Sally Stephens, “and the boys loved her cookies. She would bake 1200 for lunch and not a one would be left. She was shy and quiet but had a terrific sense of humor.”

As Jan Forrester, Assistant Director of Development, remembers, “early in her career at St. Mark’s, Thelma helped with the transition into a new servery and the W.W. Browning, Jr., Great Hall. During the year-long construction of the new facility, the cafeteria staff served lunches in a temporary tent set up on the back parking lot, which affectionately became known as The Blacktop Café. When it rained, water ran through the tent like a river, but Thelma and her colleagues managed with spirits held high.”

Having served generations of Marksmen, alumni fondly recall their daily encounters with Thelma and the important role she played for so long in both nourishing and nurturing them. The Alumni Association honored Thelma at the 2012 Spring Alumni Dinner for her 40 years of service to the School. “It meant a lot to me.” Thelma said that evening. “It means they care for me, and that’s why they did it for me. They’re like a family to me.” Thelma retired from St. Mark’s in 2014.

“We were all deeply saddened to learn of Thelma Levells passing, a woman who faithfully served the St. Mark’s community for more than four decades,” said Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini. “Thelma’s warm smile, humility, and generous spirit touched the lives of thousands of Marksmen throughout her 42-year tenure, and she left a lasting imprint on this School. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this time of loss.”

A wake will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2017, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at Golden Gate Funeral Home, 4155 R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas TX 75224.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Golden Gate Funeral Home.
