Alumnus Leads EMT Team

Umer Nadir ’15 is helping lead a campus-based emergency medical response group at the University of Texas at Dallas. He and another co-founder hope to decrease emergency response times and provide a platform for students to gain practical experience in the medical field.

The group is called University Emergency Medical Response (UEMR) and provides free emergency medical services to any member or group of the UTD community. UEMR is a nonprofit organization sponsored by UTD’s police department and currently includes more than two dozen EMT-certified students.

“This organization is all about patient care. It’s not about shadowing, it’s not about watching someone else give the care,” said Umer in an interview with The Mercury, UTD’s student newspaper. “It’s a lot more hands-on. We’re treating people at the scene. We are the first responders, and we are responsible for the health of the patients there.”

Umer, a junior biology major, is a certified emergency medical technician. After seeing the scarce opportunities for EMT-licensed students to put their skills in use, he sprang into action. He co-founded UEMR with UTD biochemistry junior Nidhish Lokesh, also a certified EMT.

Umer is attending UTD as a McDermott Scholar and was one of only 25 students selected for the Program in 2015. The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program was established at UTD in 2000 by Margaret McDermott in honor of her late husband. Since 2004, seven Marksmen have been named McDermott Scholars. Longtime friends and benefactors of St. Mark’s, the McDermotts have made a lasting impact on the School, serving as dedicated leaders and helping to transform the campus for more than half a century.
