Lion Sports Update 09/06

Football
The varsity football team opened up its season on the road at Greenhill. With great fall weather conditions, both teams found the end zone in the first quarter. The Hornets scored first but the 2-point conversion failed. The Lions answered with a 12-play drive that ended when senior Matthew Fornaro scored, followed by an extra point kicked by Colin Campbell ’20. The defenses then took turns stopping their opponents and at the half the Lions led 7-6. The Lions, having recovered a Greenhill fumble, scored next with a Paxton Scott ’20 rushing touchdown, giving the Lions a 14-6 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. Greenhill quickly tied the score on a 65-yard touchdown and got the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14. The game stayed knotted at 14 at the end of regulation forcing the teams to overtime. In OT, each team gets a possession with the ball starting on the opponent’s 25-yard line. This happens until a winner is decided. Greenhill won the toss and elected to have the ball second. The Lions proceeded to put the pressure on Hornets when a 23-yard catch by Fornaro set up a TD run by quarterback Colin Neuhoff ’19 to put the Lions up 21-14. The Hornets answered with a touchdown of their own, but the Lions special teams pressured the Hornet kicker into missing the extra point and the Lions won! The crowd went wild and the players celebrated a hard-fought win. It was an amazing start to the season. Neuhoff led the Lions in passing (141 yds on 17 for 23 attempts) and rushing (90 yards), and Fornaro led the Lions in receiving (7 catches for 86 yards). The Lions are off on the shortened Labor Day week and will take the field again against Casady (OKC) on Friday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m.
