Marksman Makes the News

It’s not uncommon to find St. Mark’s students in the news, but this summer one Marksman is literally making the news. Since the end of the school year, Will Forbes ’18 has been interning at the Dallas Morning News, earning bylines on several sports stories in one of the nations’ most-read newspapers.

“I've been heavily involved with journalism since I was in Middle School, and the opportunity to work for one of the country's best newspapers was one that I couldn’t pass up,” said Will, who was one of only five local high school students selected to be an intern at the paper. “This is a rare opportunity for a high school journalist in that I get to work full time for a major national publication. I am beyond excited!”

Will, who will start as the Lions’ quarterback in the fall, is helping tackle the local high school football beat. He’s already published articles about local high school teams’ offseason practices, the rise in college recruitment among private school teams, and a look back at recent 5A football championships. Will also helps fact-check and research other stories and publishes digital content for the paper.

“Being selected as a sports intern for the Dallas Morning News recognizes the natural ability Will has as a sportswriter and story-teller,” said Ray Westbrook, Gene and Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair and the faculty advisor to The ReMarker student newspaper and the Marksmen yearbook. “Working with professional journalists will certainly give him insights into the life of a working journalist and will offer him great opportunities for growth, both as a writer and visual communicator."

On campus, Will has been an active sports editor for The ReMarker student newspaper and will be leading a new standalone sports magazine next year.
