Summer Practice Underway

St. Mark’s may be on summer break but Marksmen are hard at work on the field and in the weight room. Gathering Monday through Thursday mornings for strength training with Coach Epperson and Coach Dilworth, Marksmen athletes aim to start the season on the right track. While many of the winter and spring sports have a short pre-season, fall sports teams like cross-country and football prepare all summer to remain competitive.

“The primary benefit to the summer program is that it will help us build strength and add lean muscle mass,” said wide receiver Seun Omonije ’18. “Lack of strength was a setback for the team last year, and this summer will ensure that we are put in the best position to win.”

While the summer workouts are optional, the turnout at the sessions directly affects the team’s focus and success in the regular season, both physically and mentally.

“Offseason practices and workouts really develop trust within the team,” said quarterback Will Forbes ’18. “When you see a big turnout at a spring practice or an optional summer workout, it really just builds confidence showing that everybody on the team is working hard towards a common goal.”

The team maintains perspective on the summer workouts, focusing toward the first game of the season against Greenhill on September 1. The team-centric aspect of the summer practices allows the boys to gain confidence and build chemistry. Wins and losses aside, the athletic program helps student-athletes build character and mental fortitude in addition to agility and muscle. Athletics provide another means through which Marksmen gain mentors and valuable life experiences.

“Athletics are the highlight of my high school career,” said Seun. “I would not be where I am today without St. Mark's athletics. The opportunities presented to me to compete at the high school and collegiate levels have given me the tools I need to succeed not only on the playing field, but in life.”
