Water Polo Wins State

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team qualified for the TISCA State Championships held at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville.  The Lions played The Woodlands HS in the first game and won 18-5. In the quarterfinal, the Lions faced the Clear Brook HS. This was a rematch from last year’s semifinal. The final score was 12-6 with the Lions on top. This victory propelled the Lions into the semifinal game against the number one seed from the West Houston Region, Jersey Village. After a great performance, the Lions won the game 12- 4. This result placed the Lions in the Championship Game where they faced Flower Mound HS. After a hard fought battle, the Lions won the game 7-6! This victory secured the 4th straight State Championship for the St. Mark’s Water Polo team!  The following athletes earned special recognition: Andrew Lin ’17 – First Team All-State; Easton Honaker ’17 – Second Team All-State; Wesley Hibbs ’17 and Christian McClain ’17 – Honorable Mention All-State.

Crew
The varsity crew team traveled last weekend to Oklahoma City to compete in the culminating event of the season, the Central District Youth Championships. The team sharpened its focus again and pushed their training to the limits, again with almost no time in the boat lineups they were to ultimately compete in.  Nine boats comprised of twenty six rowers competed in six events.  Six boats qualified for finals and three boats ultimately medaled.  The Freshman Quad of Miles Hartley, Jack Trahan, Will Rocchio, and Billy Lockhart finished 2nd, the Junior Varsity Quad of Jonathan Libby ’17, Keeton Brewster ’19, Raymond Jurcak ’19, and Jonah Simon ’19 finished 3rd, and the Novice Double of Christian Duessel ’20 and Billy Lockhart ’20 took 2nd.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team competed in the THSLL State Playoffs on May 6 and 7.  In the first round, the Lions went head to head with Lake Travis (the #2 seed from the Central region). The two teams battled in an exciting, tension packed game. Down a goal with five minutes remaining, the Lions scored the final 2 goals of the game (Luke Rogers ’17 to tie and Garrett Mize ’19 to take the lead) to win 9-8 in a thriller. The reward for victory was a matchup against the undefeated #1 ranked team in the state, The Woodlands. The Lions played a very good game, limiting The Woodlands’ opportunities and creating great scoring chances for themselves. The game went down to the final minutes, but ultimately the Lions came up a little short 9-6.  It was a very good season authored by a special group of young men who worked hard, pushed, supported, cared for, and trusted each other, and never stopped improving.
