Quiz Bowl Teams Wins State

For the first time in its ten year history, the Upper School Academic Team won the Texas State Championship on Saturday, May 6. Even after the Team’s victory at the Small School National Championship (Private/Charter division) the prior weekend, they were still the four-seed to start this state tournament. With the Middle School Team winning the state championship back in April, this is the first time in Texas state history that a single school won both the middle and high school state championships in the same year. Both the Middle and Upper School Academic Teams have a final nationals tournament coming up. The Middle School A and B teams will compete the weekend of May 13 right here in Dallas against an open field of 160 teams from across the nation. The Upper School A and B teams will travel to Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend to compete against 303 other teams. Congratulations to team members John Crawford ’17, Patrick Magee ’17, Abdullah Akbar ’18, and Connor Pierce ’19, and Coach Paul Mlakar.

Over the weekend of April 29, the Upper School Team won the Charter and Private School portion of the 2017 National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ Small School National Championship held in Chicago. The team went 13-0 on Saturday and Sunday, defeating Miami Valley (Ohio) in both the winner’s bracket final and the overall final to take the championship. In addition to the first place finish for the team, Patrick was the fourth overall best player of the tournament, scoring 88.35 points per game. The team heads to Houston next weekend to compete in the State Quiz Bowl Tournament.

“This was a great win for these boys and for all of the St. Mark's faculty who push them in every respective discipline,” said Coach Paul Mlakar. “It was also a great win for the St. Mark's Quiz Bowl Program, a culmination of hard work and persistence from team members past and present.”

The Upper School Quiz Bowl Team’s national championship comes just a week after the Middle School Quiz Bowl Team won the Texas Quiz Bowl Alliance’s Middle Grades Championship. The Middle School team finished the championship 8–2, while the other four teams in the final top bracket all finished 5–4. Congratulations to team members Miki Ghosh ’22, Tristan Doan ’21, Ned Tagtmeier ’21, and Aayush Goodapaty ’21, and Coaches Rebecca Jenkins and Paul Hoehn. The Middle School Team moves on to the national competition over the weekend of May 13.
