Lion Sports Update 03/21

Baseball
The varsity baseball team took on Bishop Lynch on Tuesday, March 7. In a tightly-contested game, the Lions’ pitchers, led by sophomore Cole Arnett, kept Lynch’s offense in check despite scattering a few hits. In the bottom of the 6th inning with the score knotted at four, pinch runner freshman Alek Houillion stole 2nd base. He followed that up with a steal of 3rd as well, surprising everyone in the park, including the Lynch catcher who overthrew the third baseman, allowing Alek to walk into home plate uncontested. Junior Reece Rabin closed out the 5-4 game, earning the save. Thursday’s contest saw St. Mark’s facing perennial foe, ESD, in a non-counter match. With the bases loaded and one out in the second inning, junior Jimmy Rodriguez hit an absolute missile to right center field, scoring all three Lions’ baserunners and earning Rodriguez a triple. Backed by an impressive two-hit, five strikeout, complete game performance by junior Will Forbes, the Lions offense stepped on the gas and put up 15 total runs as St. Mark’s downed ESD, 15-0, in five innings. This week, the varsity team hosts THESA and then travels to TCA on Saturday for a noon start.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team took on took on Coppell in a THSLL North District counter game on Wednesday, March 8.  The team played well and emerged victorious by a score of 12-5. The team then embarked on a spring break trip to North Carolina and played 3 very good teams. The Lions faced St. Ann’s Belfield and Paul VI which are the two top teams from Virginia and Hill Academy from Canada. While the Lions lost all three games, the team had some great moments and were very competitive. This week, the Lions play two road SPC counter games at Greenhill (Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.) and at ESD (Friday at 6:00 p.m.).

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team took a spring break trip to Romania last week. The roster of 12 players played eight full games against three different elite Romanian club teams: Steaua, SS1 Club, and Dinamo, all from Bucharest. The Lions won one game and lost seven. The team then had a chance to participate in a training session with the Romanian National Team. The team also had the opportunity to visit historical sites around Bucharest such as the Snagov Monastery (the resting of Vlad Tepes aka “Dracula”) as well as Slanic Prahova, the largest salt mine in Europe. Overall a great experience for our Polo athletes.

Track & Field
Before the break, the varsity Track & Field team competed in the Bubba Joiner Invitational at Liberty Christian School in Argyle.  The team enjoyed some success in a variety of events. Emmett Berger ’19 won the 800m in a personal best of 2:09.89 in a close battle with fellow teammate Pablo Arroyo ’20 (2:10.04).  Daniel Cope ’17 and Scott Smythe ’17 finished 2–3 in the Varsity 800m with Scott running a lifetime best of 2:03.10.  Zach Gilstrap ’18 had 2 PR’s in the Shot Put and Discus (40’ 7” and 134’ 11”) respectively. Clay Morris ’18 won the High Jump and Long Jump, and Keith Kadesky ’17 won the Pole Vault. On Saturday, March 18, a few of the distance runners participated in the Texas Distance Carnival at Carroll High School. With more than 1,000 runners in just four distance events, it was a magical night. Daniel Cope enjoyed a fast time in his return to form finishing 20th in the 1600m with a seasonal best of 4:33.03.  Scott Smythe also enjoyed a season best in the 1600.  Seth Weprin ’19 paced the 3200m runner with a lifetime best of 10:04.98 to finish 19th overall.  He was followed by Andres Arroyo ’20 and Pablo Arroyo, both running lifetime best of 10:21.98 and 10:22.20, respectively. Tyler Nussbaumer ’20 also PR’d in the 3200m with a time of 10:42.06. This week St. Mark’s host the 20th annual Bradley V. Urschel Invitational. With more than 1,100 athletes, both Middle School and Upper School on Friday and Saturday, it should be an exciting weekend.
