Lion Sports Update 03/08

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team beat Keller on Friday night. After the 1st quarter, the score was 6-0 and the Lions led 15-2 at the half. The team managed the score in the second half and eventually won 17-8.  For the Lions, nine players scored goals and 11 different players factored into the scoring with either a goal or an assist.  Juniors Sam Schoeder and Will Wood both had 4 goals in the contest, earning the prestigious “Gold Sombrero.”  The team goes on the road on Wednesday to play Coppell and then embarks on the annual spring break trip on Friday.  This year they are traveling to North Carolina.

Tennis
With preseason wrapped up and the roster set at 16, the varsity tennis team had their first match on Tuesday March, 28, against FWCD. The Lions won 11-0 in match play, and no line lost a set. Even though it was a non-counter, the counter lineup lost only 4 games total with line 1 and 2 singles and 1 and 2 doubles winning their matches 6-0, 6-0. A great way to start the season! Then, on Saturday, the Lions started the counter season against the Casady Cyclones from Oklahoma City.  Senior Daran Zhao saw his first action in the counter lineup and faced a tough opponent. Junior Jack Parolisi and sophomore Matthew Pollock dominated the Cyclones in the line two doubles spot winning 6-0, 6-1. The line 1 doubles team of senior Frank Thomas and sophomore Adnan Khan needed a 2nd set tiebreaker to beat a scrappy Casady doubles team. With St. Mark’s up 2-1 in matches and 2 left on the court, juniors Davis Bailey and Harris Wilson were engaged in tough singles matches, both trying to clench the win for the Lions. Wilson split the first two sets and then won the decisive 3rd set 6-3, securing the win for the Lions. The Lions will play at Trinity Valley in Ft. Worth on Wednesday (4 pm) before the spring break week off.

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team participated in the Dutton Memorial Tournament this past weekend. The Varsity team played in the Open Division and finished the tournament in 3rd place. The team beat Texas Tech (27-3) and Texas A&M (9-5), and lost to HOPS – Houston (4-10) and TOTEX – Austin (12-18). The Middle School Water Polo team also participated in this tournament.  The boys won the tournament after 4 dominating performances, beating Zilla-Austin (18-4); Thunder Gold (20-2), Viper Pigeons-Houston (16-3), and Thunder (15-4).  The Varsity Polo team will travel to Romania over spring break to train with Romanian National team as well as train and play with other club teams from Bucharest, ROM.

Track & Field
The varsity track and field team participated in the Lovejoy Invitational this past weekend.  It was good competition on an overcast, windy day.  The team finished 5th overall which is not bad with some of our “guns” sitting out the competition.  The highlight of the day was Keith Kadesky ’17 equaling the School record in the pole vault of 14’ 4” to finish 2nd overall.  That mark tied him with his brother for the school record!  Other highlights included senior Victor Barton’s 3rd  in the 800 meters with a PR of 2:06.41, the Arroyo twins, Andres ’20 and Pablo ’20, running in their first track meet finishing with excellent times in both the 3200m and 1600m, and junior Clay Morris’ victory in the high jump, equaling his SB of 6’ 2”.  This week the team splits up with the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers going to the Bubba Joiner Invitational at Liberty Christian Academy in Argyle on Friday while the distance runners travel back to Lovejoy High School for the Lovejoy Spring Distance Festival on Saturday.

Golf
The varsity golf team competed in its first event of the season, an 18-hole tournament hosted by Jesuit this past Monday at Brookhaven Country Club.  The Lions earned second place honors by posting a team score of 305, one stroke behind tournament winner, HSAA.  Seniors Devan Prabhakar (73) and Sam Clayman (74) led the way for St. Mark’s.  In the JV division, freshman Romil Mathur and sophomore James Rogers paced the Marksmen with individual scores of 82 and 83, respectively.  The Lions will look to build on the solid start with this week at All Saints’ tournament in Fort Worth (Hawks Creek Golf Club).

Crew
The varsity crew team attended the first regatta of the season in Austin this last weekend. The Heart of Texas Regatta comes early in the season leaving little water time to come back from the previous season.  One thing in certain, competition in the region is only getting stronger.  Veteran crews were ready but out stroked for most of the events being challenged by crews who train fall, winter and spring.  The stretch after Spring Break is where the bulk of the season's work is done and it will allow all of the St. Mark’s boats the time together to polish their skill to compete at a higher level. The Lightweight Double event was promising with senior Aiden Blinn and junior Eduardo Ludwig-Bernardo qualifying for the finals.  The competition was unrelenting and while the double stayed with the pack they finished seconds behind for a 5th place.

Baseball
On Tuesday, the varsity baseball team took on CHANT, a Dallas-area home school team. Despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead behind the stellar pitching of junior Reece Rabin, the Lions found themselves deadlocked with CHANT during the middle of the game until senior Grant Brooks delivered a clutch, 2-run scoring single that gave the Lions the lead for good, winning 4-2.  On Saturday, St. Mark’s hosted Casady in the first counter action of the season. In what turned out to be a slugfest, Casady scored three unanswered runs in the first two innings. The Lions did not panic and eventually erupted, scoring a whopping 10 runs in one inning. Junior Jimmy Rodriguez ignited the offense with a game-tying, 3-run triple. However, walked batters and timely hitting by the Casady offense kept them in the game until the Lions reached the 10-run rule in the bottom of the 6th inning, thus ending the game with a score of 18-8. The baseball team hopes to continue its winning streak, as they host both Bishop Lynch (Tuesday at 4 pm) and ESD (Thursday at 4:15 pm, non-counter) this week before Spring Break.

ALUMNI SPORTS NEWS
