Math Team Competes in Boston

On February 18, 2017, the top eight mathletes from the Upper School Math Team competed in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament in Boston, Massachusetts. The team finished 30th overall out of more than 100 teams, earning an automatic invitation to near year’s competition, a feat that was previously accomplished by the team in 2013, when they finished 39th.

The contest consists of several different events and rounds such as an Individual Round focused on algebra, geometry, and combinatorics, a Team Round focused on proofs, and a Guts Round requiring teams to complete 36 math problems divided into sets of four. St. Mark’s high rank in the competition came from a combination of impressive placings throughout the competition, including 37th in the Team Round, 42nd in the Guts Round, and a combined 24th in the Individual Rounds. Kevin Choi personally finished in 46th place in the Combinatorics individual competition.

Congratulations to all eight Marksmen who competed in this competition: Kevin Choi ’17, Kevin Feng ’18, Kaden Han ’17, Dylan Liu ’19, Liam Sohn ’17, Nicholas Tsao ’20, Daran Zhao ’17, and Jesse Zhong ’18.
