Lions Prepare for SPC

Wrestling
This weekend at the Texas Prep Wrestling Championships, both junior Will Wood (106 lbs.) and junior Tucker Ribman (126 lbs.) claimed their first individual state championship and both have qualified for the Prep National Championships in Lehigh, PA, on Feb. 24-25. Tucker went 4-0 on the day and beat Liberty Christian’s James Jesuroga in the finals. Will was 3-0 with 3 pins, no opponent scored a single point against him, and his cumulative wrestling time of 1 minute 48 sec means he did not wrestle the equivalent of a single period. Senior Ivan Day (132 lbs.) went 4-1 on the day earning the right to participate in a special wrestle off this Friday night at St. John’s  for the chance to qualify for the Prep Championships. Seniors Eli Ware (160 lbs.) and Drew Whigham (113 lbs.) both finished in the top 6. The team will compete in the SPC Championships this Saturday at St. John’s School in Houston.

Swim
The varsity swim team hosted both Ft. Worth Country Day and All Saints last Thursday night on Senior Night. The team dominated the meet, beating a combined FWCD and All Saints team by a score of 128 to 23. Two relay teams made up of entirely seniors took 1st (Wesley Hibb, Jacob Hum, Rohin Maganti, Benjamin Hurst) and 2nd (Andrew Lin, Christian McClain, Rohil Rai, Easton Honaker) in the 400 Free Relay. The team finishes the season this Saturday at the SPC Championships which are held at the Conroe ISD Natatorium.  Conroe is near The Woodlands just north of Houston.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team competed in  two crucial SPC counter games last week. On Tuesday, the Lions traveled to All Saints. Knowing that every possession was a must-win to keep their SPC Tournament hopes alive, the Markmen came out firing on all cylinders. Sophomore Austin Nadalini got the spot start and knocked down an early 3-pointer as the Lions forged a 14-3 lead.  However, the Saints used 10 first half free throws to cut the margin to two early in the third quarter. Junior Sam Sussman, who lead all scorers with 18 points, began dominating the action and the Lions pulled out a double digit victory 66-55.  On Friday, St. Mark’s hosted it’s final home game of the season. Senior Will Ingram made the most of his final moments in the Hicks Gym spotlight by converting several important NBA-range 3-pointers despite being hobbled by a bad ankle. Junior Reece Rabin and freshman Andrew Laczkowski also joined the long distance party as the Lions turned a three point lead at the start of the 4th quarter into an 11-point victory (54-43).  That victory ensures that the Lions will play in the SPC Tournament in Houston this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. In their final regular season game, the Lions fell to ESD 23–46, placing them at the #6 seed at the SPC Tournament.

Soccer

Needing a win to secure a berth in the SPC tournament in Houston, the varsity soccer team traveled to All Saints last Tuesday where a dismal performance saw them unable to score while their hosts tallied three times in the final twenty minutes. The loss dropped the Lions to fifth, three points from safety, nullifying any hopes of attaining a coveted bye in the first round of the championships, and placing them at risk of not qualifying for the tournament altogether. Hosting first place Cistercian on Friday evening, the Lions responded with their most creative and energetic performance of the season. Despite falling behind, St. Mark’s equalized before halftime with a goal when senior Hyer Thomas’ cross was redirected into the Hawks’ goal at the near post by Josh Bandopadhay ’17. Unfortunately, despite having the run of play throughout the match and creating countless opportunities, the Lions simply could not find the back of Cistercian’s net. Defensive miscues accounted for all three of the Hawks goals which saw them leave as victors. Thankfully, the Lions regrouped for an incredible 4–0 win over ESD on Monday night, securing their slot in the SPC Tournament.
