Lion Sports Update 02/01

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team competed in the Arlington Bowie Tournament this past Friday and Saturday. The tournament had approximately 25 teams that included some highly ranked 5A and 6A public schools. The Lions had two athletes place in the tournament: Will Wood ’18 took 3rd at 106 lbs. and Eli Ware ’17 took 4th at 160 lbs. The team will wrestle in the Prep State Championships this Saturday at McKinney Christian and then travel to Houston to compete in the SPC Championships on February 11 at St. John’s.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team competed in two games last week. In the first contest at Oakridge, the Lions jumped out to an early lead and extended it to 15 in the 3rd quarter. However, Oakridge came storming back, thanks in part to Marksman foul trouble. With 13 seconds on the clock, St. Mark’s had the ball with the score tied and a chance to win but could not get off a quality shot. The Lions lost in overtime by 5. Strangely, only 3 players scored in the game – senior Will Ingram, junior Sam Sussman, and freshman Andrew Laczkowski. Friday evening was senior night. A terrific crowd was on-hand to watch the Lions square off against Dallas Christian. Four seniors started together – captains Will Ingram and Fabian Reyher, along with Michael Wang and James Hancock. Playing with the utmost energy, the Lions used a balanced scoring attack to forge a small lead that they would never relinquish. Dallas Christian had several chances late to tie or take the lead, but St. Mark’s pulled out the 2-point win in dramatic fashion. The best part of the story line was that all four seniors scored, and Wang, Hancock, and Ingram led the team with 9, 8, and 8 points, respectively. This week, the Lions play two crucial SPC counter games with a tournament bid in the balance. Tuesday night’s game is at All Saints at 7:30 p.m., and the final home game of the season will be on Friday against Cistercian at 7:30 p.m.

Swim
The varsity swim team hosted Cistercian last Tuesday. The team swam well and defeated the Hawks by a score of 110-57. The team also competed in the Greenhill Invitational on Saturday. The meet was unscored but the Lions’ times keep improving. The Lions will host their Senior Night in the Rogers Natatorium on Thursday, February 2, at 5:45 p.m. against Ft. Worth Country Day and All Saints.

Soccer
The influence of the senior class was prevalent as the varsity soccer team defeated their hosts, Oakridge, by a score of 2-0 last Tuesday. A senior-laden defense consisting of Jake Vaughn, Teddy Koudelka, Grant Brooks, Gordon Gunn, and Corday Cruz helped Jeremy Kerber keep a clean sheet. Meanwhile, Hyer Thomas’17 scored twice with a great deal of help on both goals from Josh Bandopadhay ’17. On Friday evening, Senior Night was a huge success as the Lions defeated the Home School Athletic Association by a score of 6-0. Daniel Chavez ’17 proved to be the earlier provider by setting up goals for Nolan Jenevein ’17 and Bandopadhay. After an earlier assist Thomas twice found the back of the net in rapid succession at the end of the first half. Scotty Smythe ’17 and Koudelka, along with Matt Power ’18 and Bandopadhay created the goals through clever combination play. Owen Berger ’18 opportunistically redirected Arjun Singh’s ’18 effort on goal with a decisive left-footed strike. Power finished the second half scoring with his first goal of the season. The Lions now look to clinch a place at the SPC Championships with a victory at All Saints on Tuesday before finishing the week by hosting north zone frontrunner Cistercian on Friday.
