Alumnus Concludes Stellar Season

On Sunday, January 23, 2017, Ty Montgomery ’11 concluded a second stellar NFL season with the Green Back Packers. The running back made a name for himself during the 2016–2017 professional football season, helping the Packers advance to the NFC Championships.

When injuries took out some of Green Bay’s top running backs, Ty was called upon to run the ball more often. Before long, he proved to be a valuable asset to the team and was moved from wide receiver to running back by head coach Mike McCarthy in the middle of December. Montgomery met fellow alumnus Sam Acho ’07 on the field when the Packers faced the Chicago Bears on December 18. In that game, Ty racked up 16 carries and rushed for 162 yards, helping his team advance to a postseason matchup against his hometown Dallas Cowboys. While Cowboys fans were disappointed by their loss, Ty rushed for 47 yards and scored two touchdowns, ensuring the Packers’ place in the National Football Conference Championship game against the Atlanta Falcons.

After graduating from St. Mark’s in 2011, Ty played football for four years and earned his Political Science degree at Stanford University. He was the recipient of the Menlo-Atherton Trophy, which is given to Stanford’s outstanding freshman and finished his college football career with more than 2,200 all-purpose yards, which placed him third in program history. Throughout his professional career, Ty has worked alongside his mother, Lisa, to advocate for the benefits of foster care and the important role that it plays in children’s lives.

Montgomery was selected in the third round of 2015 NFL draft, the 94th overall pick, and played his first season as a wide receiver where he scored 2 touchdowns and had 136 receiving yards. As the season comes to an end, Montgomery has solidified himself as a competent and capable running back with 457 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns in the 2016 season and we look forward to seeing him play in the 2017 season.
