Bestselling Author Visits Campus

On Tuesday and Wednesday, November 1–2, St. Mark’s welcomed Casey Sherman, bestseller author, journalist, screenwriter, and storyteller. Brought to campus by the Robert E. Dennard Visiting Scholar Program, Sherman met with St. Mark’s Middle and Upper School students in both small and large group settings to share his experiences writing about the leader within and the power of preparedness. This highly esteemed guest also participated in the Alumni Leadership Speaker Series.

Sherman held seven sessions with students in grades 5–12. With eleventh grade AP English students, he discussed the process of turning news into an engaging narrative. Speaking in his concluding session with a large group of Upper School students, Sherman’s amazing storytelling skills were at their best. He recounted the greatest small boat rescue in U.S. history, which was the subject of his 2009 book The Finest Hours. Disney released the movie of the same name in January 2016. He also uplifted the St. Mark’s community with the true stories of resiliency, hope, and courage in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing. The upcoming movie Patriots Day, starring Mark Wahlberg, is based on his book Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph Over Tragedy.

Sherman is also a contributing writer for Esquire, Huffington Post, Boston Magazine and Fox News, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work as a television news producer for WBZ-TV. He has appeared on more than 100 television programs, including segments for CNN, Fox News, The Today Show, C-SPAN, Unsolved Mysteries, The History Channel, ABC World News Tonight, The CBS Evening News, Discovery, The Travel Cannel, and The View.

Casey Sherman was born in Hyannis, Massachusetts, in 1969, and graduated from Fryeberg Academy and Boston University. A gifted storyteller and commanding speaker, he has performed his one-man show Tales of Suspense at venues around the country, including the historic Wilbur Theatre in Boston.
