Middle Schoolers Mentor 4th Grade

On Monday, May 16, 2016, the sixth-grade Class of 2022 gathered on campus with the fourth-grade Class of 2024 to share a picnic and some wisdom with the rising Middle Schoolers. The picnic was divided into stations of sixth-grade advisory groups, and each fourth-grade student was paired with two sixth-grade buddies for advice and insight on the transition from Lower School to Middle School. After sharing lunch, they completed various team-building exercises, including constructing giant sculptures from newspaper and packing tape.

The event idea began when the sixth grade advisory representatives challenged their students to come up with an on-campus project in service to the community. Once they decided to focus on an event with the rising fifth graders, the boys started planning. They determined the schedule and how the activities were organized with the goal of providing a fun and meaningful afternoon.

"I think this picnic provides a great deal of fun for the boys and could become a tradition at the School,” said sixth grade Humanities teacher and Class Sponsor Rebecca Jenkins.

Middle School is often seen as one of the biggest transitions for Marksmen. They are awarded much more freedom, collaboration with the Upper Schoolers, and exposure to more class options. As they transition into Middle School, it is helpful for them to have an understanding of their exciting new environment.
