Former Nurse "Mrs. E." Honored

On Friday, March 11, 2016, St. Mark’s dedicated the Nurse’s Office in honor of beloved former nurse Elva Eichenwald. Beginning in 1974, Elva served the School for sixteen years and is the mother of two Marksmen, Kurt ’79 and Eric ’76, and the grandmother of three Marksmen, Adam ’10, Ryan ’13, and Sam ’16. Family, friends, and current and former faculty gathered in the Lower School library to greet Elva at a reception in her honor.

Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini thanked Elva for her years of service and summarized her many contributions to the physical, mental, and emotional health of the many Marksmen and faculty members. Many of the stories he told came from former colleagues, Bob Kohler ’66, Alice Oltrogge, and Larry Cavitt.

“Today we honor ‘Mrs. E.,’ by dedicating the St. Mark’s Nurse’s Office in her honor,” David said. “Thank you, Elva, for everything you’ve done to make this not only a great school for Marksmen across the generations, but also for helping build such a special community. We owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude and are proud that this space will serve as a lasting tribute to your good work.”

Former student and current Trustee David Genecov ’82 spoke for all the alumni and board members in remembering how much Mrs. Eichenwald meant to each of them. A surprise phone call from former science teacher Stephanie Barta delighted Elva and the group gathered in her honor. Elva was shown the plaque mounted outside of the Nurse’s Office with the inscription: Given in honor of “Mrs. E” for the care and love she dispensed to Marksmen.
