Victoribus Spolia!

Victoribus Spolia! To the victors, the spoils! Seventeen members of the St. Mark’s Classics Club participated in the Texas State Junior Classical League Area C Convention at Lewisville High School over the weekend of February 13, 2016. The boys competed against regional high school students in a broad range of testing categories, from Roman Life and Civilization to Latin Reading Comprehension, and at the end of the day, brought home a total of 25 ribbons. Special recognition goes to Max Wang ’19, David Vallejo ’19, and Noah Carr ’19, each of whom brought home the maximum of two blue ribbons. Killian Green ’17 and Shailen Parmar ’17 each earned a blue 1st place and yellow 2nd place ribbon; Rohan Vemu ’18 and Roshan Vemu ’19 swept the blue ribbons in the Decathlon category; Andrew Smith ’18 brought home a blue ribbon in Reading Comprehension of Latin Poetry; and Andres Arroyo ’20 and Pablo Arroyo ’20 each won two 2nd and two 3rd place ribbons.

A team of four boys competed in the Certamen, the focal competition with a quiz bowl format. Max Wang, David Vallejo, Roshan Vemu, and Matthew Coleman ’19 brought home the Intermediate Level 3rd-place trophy after a closely fought contest. At the Advanced Level, a team of Rohan Vemu, Cal Rothkrug ’18, Andrew Smith, and Creston Brooks ’19 came from behind to win first place, an extraordinary achievement in light of the team's youth.
