Jurvetson '85 Leads Panel Discussion

Steve Jurvetson ’85 was the featured panel speaker during Alumni Weekend on Friday, April 24, 2015. A partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Steve has been at the forefront of emerging technology for decades. He currently sits on the boards of several high-profile tech companies including SpaceX, Planet Labs, Synthetic Genomics, and Tesla Motors. He was also the world’s first owner of the Tesla Model S electric car.

Fielding questions from Nathan Ondracek ’15 and speaking to both alumni and Upper School students, Steve shared stories about his life as a venture capitalist, his favorite investments, and how science will shape the future of today’s students.

“You’re all going to go into a STEM field, you just might not know it yet. If you want to understand the world you live in, what shapes the social fabric of society and what drives all trajectories in every industry, it’s going to be science and engineering.”

Steve also pointed out the value of his St. Mark’s education.

“Academically, I was prepared like I never could have imagined, which allowed me to do so much more than I would have had time for.”
