Eighth-Grader Wins Science Competition

Eighth-grader Gopal Raman and his team of students from other area schools have been named regional winners in the 2013 ExploraVision science competition. A representative from Toshiba visited St. Mark's to present Gopal and his teammates with special awards for their work.

The team's project, BlindVision, hopes to give sight back to the blind through a special pair of glasses with a camera synced to a computer chip embedded in the subject's brain. As the camera captures the video in front of the subject, the signal is sent to the chip, which translates the image into cortical signals that the visual cortex can comprehend.

Not long after hearing about his ExploraVision honor, Gopal received awards at another science competition, for a project researching galvanic skin response and glucose levels in the blood. Gopal placed first in both the State and Region levels.

The team was sponsored by Head of Middle School Warren Foxworth ’66. The team's mentor was Ram Laksnarain.

The ExploraVision Competition is presented by the National Science Teachers Association and Toshiba.
