Holtberg to Retire in 2014

On Saturday, March 9, at a meeting of the Board of Trustees, Eugene McDermott Headmaster Arnie Holtberg announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. “It has been a distinct pleasure and honor to work within this School community,” said Mr. Holtberg in his letter to the Trustees. “Together, we have worked conscientiously to fulfill the School’s mission. We have strengthened programs, developed the campus, and have always put the needs of our students first.”

Board of Trustees President Randall Fojtasek ’81 acknowledged Mr. Holtberg’s exceptional contributions to the School over the past 20 years and announced that his tenure as Headmaster would extend another 16 months. “Since he first arrived at 10600 Preston Road in 1993, Arnie has been an advocate for the ‘whole boy.’ He set the School on a clear and steady path from which we have never wavered. His constant message of ‘striving for excellence’ and ‘continuous improvement’ can be seen throughout the School.”

More than 1,600 young men have graduated from St. Mark’s during Mr. Holtberg’s two decades as Headmaster. He has overseen two successful fundraising campaigns including the soon-to-be-completed Centennial Challenge, one of the largest of such efforts by any independent day school. Mr. Holtberg’s leadership has enabled the School to transform the campus, significantly increase enrollment and admission demand, bolster academic and extracurricular programs, and recruit a truly exceptional faculty, staff and administration. His untiring efforts have propelled the School forward in many important ways and he will leave a legacy of excellence that will last for generations to come.

Mr. Fojtasek also announced that a Search Committee has been formed to lead the selection process for Mr. Holtberg’s successor. Two former Board Presidents, Dr. Leonard Riggs and Mr. Ken Hersh ’81 will co-chair the Head of School Search Committee. More information regarding the search will be made available soon.
