Act of Valor Star Visits Campus

On Tuesday, December 11, St. Mark's welcomed former Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Rorke Denver to speak at Middle and Upper School assemblies. Denver shared some of his experiences of what it takes to be a man of honor and courage, not only through his combat history but as a team leader of the nation's most elite soldiers.

Denver opened with a few practical suggestions for the boys before diving into the time he spent in BRAVO Platoon at SEAL Team THREE, operating in Central and South America and then in Iraq's combat-heavy Al Anbar Province. Denver passed along the phrase, "Calm is contagious," which he learned in his SEAL training and later implemented during his thirteen year career as an activity duty SEAL. To illustrate some of his points, Denver showed scenes from the feature film Act of Valor, in which he starred with other real-life Navy SEALs.

Rorke Denver is a graduate from Syracuse University and an honor graduate of the US Army Ranger School. His first book, Damn Few: Making the Modern Warrior, is being published in January 2013, by Hyperion.
