Choir Debuts Commissioned Music

On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, St. Mark's Upper School Choir performed its first ever piece of commissioned music. At the behest of Choirmaster Tinsley Silcox, famed composer and organist Kurt Knecht completed a composition titled "La Blanca Palomica," based on a text written by St. John of the Cross, one of the foremost poets in the Spanish Language.

Once Mr. Silcox made the decision to commission music for the Choir, he turned to Kurt Knecht, his longtime friend and former student, who is now an internationally recognized composer, conductor, and organist. The Upper School Choir debuted the piece during Upper School Chapel on Wednesday, October 31. During choir class that same day, the boys had the opportunity to discuss the piece with Kurt via a conference call, asking questions about the text and music.

A recording of the Upper School Choir performing "La Blanca Palomica" is available on St. Mark's podcast channel in iTunes.

The Choir of St. Mark's will  be performing a Service of Choral Evensong in the St. Mark's Chapel on Sunday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m..
