New Master Teacher Appointed

Foreign Language instructor Janet Lin has been announced as the next holder of the Gene and Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair, Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini announced in the first full faculty pre-sessional meeting Aug. 17.

Since joining the Foreign Language Department in 2016, Lin has shared her passion for Chinese language and culture with both her students and the entire community.

“Janet Lin brings pure joy and enthusiasm to the classroom,” said Dini in making the announcement at a meeting of the full faculty and staff. “A dedicated advisor and supportive teammate, she cares deeply for the boys and all of us. Janet shows up every day looking for opportunities to make a difference.”

Beyond teaching in the classroom, Lin has worked to introduce the culture of China to the campus through International Week activities and the memorable Lunar New Year celebrations. She has led Marksmen on international tours of China and coached and supported boys who have gone on to win international language competitions.

Lin is one of the rotating junior/senior class sponsors and she also supports several clubs and activities including Upper School Chinese Club, Upper School Ping Pong Club and the St. Mark’s chapter of the Chinese Honor Society, which she helped found in 2019. Outside of St. Mark’s, she serves as an AP Chinese exam reader and IB Mandarin ab initio examiner. In 2019, Lin was named a recipient of the John H. Murrell Excellence-in-Teaching Award.

Lin earned her B.A. in journalism at the Universal Journalism College in Taipei, Taiwan, and her B.A. in philosophy from Soochow University in Taipei. Prior to arriving at St. Mark’s, Lin taught Mandarin Chinese at The Westwood School in Dallas.

The Gene and Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair was established in 2011 in honor of two former St. Mark’s faculty members: wrestling coach Gene Oltrogge and Lower School art instructor Alice Oltrogge. It was held by Ray Westbrook until 2022, when he was appointed director of Communications.
