New Lacrosse Coach Appointed

After an extensive national search, Trey Whitty has been appointed to the St. Mark’s faculty and will guide the Varsity Lacrosse program beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. An experienced teacher, coach, and educator, Trey brings a track record of excellence and commitment to our athletics program and our school community. In addition to leading the lacrosse program, he will join the Physical Education department and support the efforts of our Admission and Financial Aid team.

A graduate of St. Paul’s School for Boys in Brooklandville, Maryland, Trey went on to attend the University of Virginia, where he played lacrosse and served as Team Captain of their 2003 National Championship team. Following his collegiate experience, he pursued a career in education and has served as a teacher, coach, and administrator at several Baltimore-area independent schools. He spent seven years on the faculty and coaching staff at McDonogh School where he was twice recognized as the U.S. Lacrosse Assistant Coach of the Year and helped lead their boys’ lacrosse team to an MIAA Championship. Having earned noteworthy recognition and success in one of the most competitive boys’ lacrosse conferences in the country, in 2017, he returned to his alma mater, St. Paul’s, where he has served as Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach and Athletic Director. In addition to his experience in athletics, Coach Whitty has also taught history, worked in college counseling, served as a grade-level dean, and more.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled for my family to be joining the St. Mark’s community," said Coach Whitty. "St. Mark’s embraces everything I believe in as an institution, with a commitment to character, development, hard work, and genuine care for each member of the community. I am humbled to lead such a storied program and hope we can build upon this strong foundation. Our program will be centered on pride for our institution, care for one another, and a commitment to doing our very best.”

Coach Whitty, his wife KC, and their boys will be on campus in early December so that he can meet with lacrosse players and begin preparations for his family’s transition to Dallas next summer. Coach Whitty also has a strong relationship with Jason Leneau, St. Mark’s Assistant Head of Upper School and Acting Varsity Lacrosse Coach, as they competed against each other in high school before becoming teammates at the University of Virginia.

St. Mark’s Athletic Director Sean Lissemore said, “From our first conversation together, it was immediately evident that Trey possesses a strong passion for education and cherishes the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of young men. He exemplifies the qualities that we strive to instill in our Marksmen students and understands the importance of doing things the right way both on and off the field.”
