Lion Sports Update (09/27)

Football
After a bye week, the Lions’ varsity football team hosted Founders Academy of Lewisville on Friday night. The Lions offense got rolling early with quick-striking drives that included touchdowns from QB Alex Nadalini, WR Blake Malouf, RB Niles Harvey, and TE Noah Williams. While the offense moved the ball efficiently, the Lions’ defense had a banner night, with eight interceptions and four defensive scores. Elijah Ellis brought two interceptions back for touchdowns. Caleb VanZant tallied three interceptions, two for touchdowns. Hudson Bloom, Keats Leffel, and J.J. Pennington also got in on the action with picks of their own. Grant Warnecke added two points to the total by tackling the Founders’ running back in the end zone for a safety. The Lions’ turned in a complete-game performance to cap off the program’s 400th win. The 4-0 Lions now prepare for their first SPC 4A divisional matchup as they travel to Houston to take on the 4-1 Kinkaid Falcons on Friday night.

Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team played two matches this past week. On Thursday, the Lions traveled to Trinity Valley in the second game of a home-and-home with the Trojans. The teams split the first two sets, and the Trojans won the 3rd set to put the Lions’ undefeated season at risk. With a gritty come-from-behind effort, the Lions won the 4th set and forced a 5th set to 15. Big plays by senior George Warren and freshman Jacob Lobdell capped off a huge team effort in the 5th game, giving St. Mark’s the 3-2 victory. On Saturday, the Lions hosted Casady (Oklahoma City) in their first SPC North Zone match-up of the season. The first set went back and forth, but the Lions pulled ahead at the end behind some huge kills by senior Miller Trubey and Will Shoup. The 2nd set saw the Lions play great defense and senior Jodie Thompson had multiple tools off the block to break the Cyclones spirit. The 3rd set went in the Lions favor again, this time led by nine service points by junior libero Zach Nivica. In what was the best all-around effort by the Lions this season to date, the Lions won 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) and sit tied atop the SPC North Standings with Greenhill, who the Lions will host in a non-counter “friendly” match on Thursday, Sept. 30. On Friday, October 1, the Lions will travel to Oklahoma City to play their second SPC North Zone match against Casady.

Cross Country
The varsity cross country team has continued their rigorous training during their non-competition weeks and are now set for back-to-back weekends against elite competition. The team travels to Fayetteville, Arkansas, this Friday to compete in the Chili Pepper Festival on the campus of the University of Arkansas and then to Tomball, Texas, the following weekend to compete in the Maverick Ramble.
