Upper Schoolers Show Their Spirit

As the 2020-2021 school year comes to a close, Upper School students rallied together for Spirit Week, a campus-wide celebration of Lion pride organized by the Student Council. From April 26-30, hallways and fields buzzed with activity as boys dressed for five different theme days and took part in games, activities, and competitions split between two teams (Blue and Gold).

"We wanted to do something to bring the whole Upper School together, and what better way to do that than over some friendly competition?" said Blake Hudspeth ’21, Student Council President, who helped organize Spirit Week along with Vice President Sarbik Saha ’21 and the rest of the Student Council.

"Spirit Week was a great boost for the final stretch of the school year and, beyond having fun, it also showed how invested the students are in our community," said Colin Igoe, Head of Upper School. "The Student Council worked diligently under challenging circumstances to create a memorable week. These Upper School boys are setting a great example for younger students about how to lead positively.”

The Student Council planned activities for each of the theme days, including kickball (Major League Monday), a three-legged relay race (Twin Tuesday), a Nerf battle (Wild West Wednesday), and a wheelbarrow race (Throwback Thursday). The week of festivities culminated during Blue and Gold Friday, with bubble soccer, tug-o-war, and flag football.

“The energy I felt from the student body that whole week was awesome,” Blake said. “Not only was there a sense of comradery throughout the two Blue and Gold teams, but because of the integration of all of the grades, there was a strong sense of brotherhood throughout the whole Upper School.”

While the Blue Team ultimately won with 115 of the possible 200 points, the entire Upper School walked away feeling like champions.

“A lot of guys came up to me and said that Spirit Week felt like a little bit of normalcy during a very unusual school year,” Blake said. "That’s what the Student Council hoped would happen.”
