Publications Earn Four Gold Crowns

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) announced its annual Crown Awards, recognizing the top student publications in the nation. Marksmen brought home four Gold Crowns, the Association’s highest honor, for works published in the 2019-2020 school year:

  • The ReMarker student newspaper won its 18th consecutive Gold Crown (a CSPA record).
  • Focus, The ReMarker’s single-topic magazine, won its first Gold Crown (This is the first year that Focus has been submitted for consideration).
  • The Marque literary magazine won its eighth consecutive Gold Crown.
  • The Scientific Marksman, a student-produced scientific journal, won its second consecutive Gold Crown.

“I am unbelievably proud of the boys’ hard work and perseverance in creating this high-quality magazine during the very difficult year,” said Lynne Schwartz, faculty sponsor of The Marque and holder of the Trustee Master Teaching Chair. “The amazing contributions by the students in poetry, fiction, and the arts are the real strength of the publication. Bravo to our fantastic writers and artists who worked so hard and so well to maintain the outstanding quality recognized by the CSPA.”

The Gold Crown awards honor the thousands of hours invested by dozens of students in crafting world-class publications. This achievement is even more impressive considering the unprecedented obstacles that Marksmen faced in 2019-2020. In addition to the pandemic that brought much of the world to a halt in the spring, St. Mark’s also had to contend with the impact of an EF-3 tornado in the fall. Nevertheless, Marksmen persevered, organizing their publications from home and using online tools to remotely plan their issues, edit stories, and review layouts. The result is not only a slate of impressive publications but also enduring lessons of ingenuity and resiliency.

The 2019-2020 editors of these award-winning publications were Sam Ahmed ’20 (The ReMarker); Alam Alidina ’21 and Sai Thirunagari ’21 (Focus); Neal Reddy ’20 and Kasen Roberson ’20 (The Marque); and Ishan Gupta ’20 and James Shiao ’20 (The Scientific Marksman). The publications were overseen by faculty advisers Ray Westbrook (The ReMarker and Focus); Lynne Schwartz and Geoff Stanbury (The Marque); and Dr. Bonnie Flint (The Scientific Marksman).
