Scouting for Food

With the ongoing pandemic magnifying food insecurity, St. Mark’s Boy Scout Troop 730 decided to address the issue by taking part in Scouting for Food. This program connects food banks with local Scout troops who organize collection drives. Troop 730 collaborated with North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM) as the beneficiary of their food drive. The Scouts provided their neighbors with an empty bag and directions to fill it with food, which the Scouts picked up a few days later.

“It felt great knowing that in just a few months, myself and my troop were able to help our community by donating more than 2,000 food items,” said Jack Tholking ’25.

Prior to the pandemic, NDSM would provide food for 30 to 40 families a day. That average is now up to 150 or more families every day. “It is thrilling and heartwarming when children become aware of very basic needs in their community and, with the help of parents and school leaders, decide to take action, carry out their project and have a fun, happy time doing so,” said Judy Rorrie, Executive Director of NDSM.

“Seeing and hearing about all the people who have food to support their family because of something our Troop did is so heart-filling,” said Jack Wilson ’28.

Mrs. Rorrie added a special message for all those involved in Scouting for Food: “You have used your time and energy to focus on the needs of others who, without your help, may have had no food to eat. All of us at NDSM are very proud of you and very grateful for what you have done.”

Boy Scout Troop 730 is chartered by St. Mark’s.
