Marksmen Scouts Complete Eagle Projects

Four Marksmen recently completed their Eagle Scout Service Projects, taking a major step toward achieving Scouting’s highest honor. Nikhil Dattarteya ’23, Nathan Meyer ’24, Lawrence Gardner ’25, and William Morrow ’25 have worked diligently over the summer and fall to organize and lead individual projects benefiting their communities.

Nikhil initiated and organized a food drive and collected money to benefit North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM), which operates a food pantry as part of its broader program of providing charitable assistance to those in need. “I decided that running a food drive could serve two purposes: one obviously being to donate food to a local food pantry in need, but also to raise awareness of the growing food insecurity during the quarantine,” Nikhil said. With the help of volunteers, Nikhil promoted the drive and gathered, organized, and delivered the donations to NDSM.

Nathan’s love for animals led him to select SPCA Dallas as the focus of his Eagle Project. Nathan coordinated efforts to build a footbridge that would improve access across a ditch to an area where volunteers can socialize with the animals in their care. With the help of several other Scouts, Nathan and his team completed the bridge over the summer.

“When I first started out as a Cub Scout, the Eagle Scout rank seemed miles away,” Nathan said. “As I progressed through the early ranks, I began to realize that if I continued at the pace I was moving, I would have a decent chance of becoming an Eagle Scout.”

For Lawrence’s project, he decided to build sitting benches for Minnie’s Food pantry. The benches provide needed rest for families waiting in line outside, often for hours with young children. “The feeling you get from knowing that you have helped change someone’s life is irreplaceable and something you will hold onto forever,” Lawrence said.

William, with the help of several fellow Marksmen Scouts and Ronald McDonald House employees, constructed large shelving units for a new storage shed at Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. The shelves improve storage space, making it easier to organize and store items.

“Working with William and watching him lead his peers to success gave me an over whelming sense of Boy Scout pride,” said JP Kulpaca, Ronald McDonald House facilities assistant and Eagle Scout. “I will always be honored to have been a part of William’s journey.”

These Marksmen Scouts are part of Boy Scout Troop 730, which is chartered by St. Mark’s.
