Honoring Our Lions

As the 2019–2020 school year comes to a close, the St. Mark’s held its annual Athletic Banquet in a new, virtual setting. In addition to celebrating some of this year’s outstanding individual athletes, this was also a celebration of the community’s strength and resilience in the face of an unusual year.

“Each new challenge has been conquered through the collective strength and uplifting spirit of our remarkable students, coaches, faculty, staff, parents, and supporters,” said Athletic Director Sean Lissemore. “The many fond memories, notable accomplishments, and historic athletic performances from this past year are a powerful testament to our School’s outstanding culture, which has continuously served as a resolute foundation for us all throughout these uncertain times.”

While the Lions began their fall season strong, a tornado on the evening of October 20, 2019, destroyed Hicks Gym and severely damaged or destroyed much of the School’s athletic facilities just days before Homecoming. The School rallied together and, with the support of fellow Dallas schools, the Lions were able to play their Homecoming football and volleyball games as originally scheduled. Undeterred by the ongoing restoration work on campus, the winter sports teams enjoyed an incredible run, ending with three SPC Championship trophies in February 2020. As excitement grew around the spring sports, the outbreak of COVID-19 led to a sudden cancellation of practices and games, as well as all classes and activities. Nevertheless, Lions continued to display leadership, camaraderie, and positivity both on and off the field.

“It is our sincere hope that every one of our athletes not only enjoys his time competing as a Lion, but more importantly, that he carries with him valuable life lessons,” said Eugene McDermott Headmaster David W. Dini. “We are particularly grateful to all of you who supported our athletic programs throughout the course of the year.”
