Debate Team Competes in Nationals

Over the weekend of April 13, 2019, St. Mark’s debate teams competed against 100 other teams representing 20 states at the National Debate Coaches Association (NDCA) National Championship Tournament. This year’s tournament was hosted by Glenbrook South High School in the suburbs of Chicago. Sahitya Senapathy '20 and David Yang '21 extended St. Mark's streak of reaching the NDCA elimination rounds to 11 straight years by winning four of six preliminary debates. Sahitya and David had wins over teams from Glenbrook South (IL), Palos Verdes Peninsula (CA) and two teams from Lexington (MA).

Seniors David Vallejo, Max Wang, Samir Ratakonda and Wheeler Sears ended their St. Mark’s debate careers with respectable 3-3 records. Among their many career highlights, Max reached the semifinals of the NDCA as a sophomore debating with Harris Wilson ’17, and Wheeler reached the quarterfinals last year, also debating with Harris.

The debate team got a morale boost from local alumni Charlie Marshall ’14 (University of Chicago), Ansh Khullar ’16 (Trinity University), and Rishee Batra ’12 (Northwestern University), who came to cheer on their fellow Marksmen.
