Crew
The varsity crew team traveled to Austin this last weekend to participate in the Texas Rowing Championships at Lady Bird Lake. The two-day event brought 21 clubs and 535 participants to race in sculling, sweep rowing, and masters events. It also brought lightning and 30 mph winds for the first day of racing. St. Mark’s qualified 3 out of 5 boats on Saturday for finals and 5 out of 7 entries on Sunday. Saturday’s events consisted of Novice 4x, Novice 2x and the Varsity 2-. Two Novice 4x boat qualified for finals. Paul Valois, Antonio Quiñones, Sam Morgan, and Drake Elliott qualified in one heat while Evan McGowan, Austin Williams, Benjamin Gravel, and Rohan Khatti qualified in another. The combination of lightning delays and high winds caused a cancellation of finals for the Novice 4x, but had the finishes been determined by heat times, our boats would have placed 3rd and 5th. The Varsity 2- rowed by juniors Christian Duessel and Billy Lockhart placed 2nd for a silver medal. The weather turned much more favorable on Sunday although higher winds in the morning challenged crews in qualifying heats. That did not prevent St. Mark’s from qualifying 5 boats in 6 events for finals. The first event of the day was a Novice 1x raced by Paul Valois. Paul dominated his heat with a 1st place finish and followed it up a strong 2nd place, silver medal finish in the final. The JV4x of Will Chance, Buck Elliott, Alexander Emery, and Miles Hartley finished 3rd in their final for a bronze medal. Billy Lockhart, Jack Trahan, Blake Hudspeth, and Christian Duessel finished .9 seconds behind the leader in the Varsity 4x final for the silver medal. Billy Lockhart and Christian Duessel, racing hard and with open water between them and their nearest competitor, came in 1st for the Texas Rowing Championship State Title for the Varsity 2x. The weekend results bode well for the next regatta which is in Oklahoma City. The Central Youth Championship, May 4 and 5, is the regional challenge for crews to qualify for the Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida in June.

Baseball
Last Monday, the varsity baseball team played TACA. Facing the best arm the Lions have seen this season, St. Mark’s scratched across two runs against the hard-throwing TACA right-hander (he was averaging upper 80s-low 90s mph) when juniors Mason Rareshide and Aaron Thorne collected RBIs. The “Daniel Duo” of senior Daniel Mircohna and sophomore Daniel Sanchez tried to keep the TACA bats at bay, but the opposition proved too strong as the Lions dropped the game 3-6. The next day, St. Mark’s traveled to Trinity Christian Academy for another non-counter match-up. A promising first inning rally was started by seniors Connor Pierce and Cole Arnett, which led to three runs after an RBI-single by Rareshide and a two-run single by Sanchez. However, TCA responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first after a series of hits, errors, and walks undid the Lions. Sophomore Alex Zuch pitched two quality innings of relief, but Trinity Christian’s hot hitting continued until it reached the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth, thus ending the contest at 3-13. Returning to counter play this week, St. Mark’s travels over to Fort Worth on Tuesday to take on the SPC North Zone leader Fort Worth Country Day (4-0) and then hosts Casady (0-3) on Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

Track & Field
The varsity track & field team participated in a small, last minute meet on Wednesday before the ISAS Festival hosted by Greenhill School. Despite the strong winds, the Lions were able to produce some excellent improvements. Sophomore Mike Vanesko PR’d in the pole vault (11' 6") and 400m (57.26). Sophomore Kit Colson ran his first open 400m since 7th grade and came away with a huge PR of 50.92. Senior Gabe Bankston and freshman Sam Eluemunoh had a big PR throws in the shot put with marks of 40' 5" and 39' 4.5", respectively. Sophomore Cristian Pereira had a PR in the long jump of 20' 4.5". The 4x100 Relay team (Josh Mysore, Garrett Davis, Cristian Pereira, Kit Colson) put it all together and ran a season-best of 44.04. Freshman Enoch Ellis ran a PR in the 110 hurdles with a mark of 15.48. All in all, a productive meet. This week the team participates in the SPC North Zone meet at Greenhill on Thursday.

Golf
Last week, the varsity golf team participated in a variety of late-week matches. On April 10th, St. Mark’s competed at Sherrill Park in 3 different matches. Against ESD, the 6-man team of Romil Mathur, James Rogers, Camp Collins, Tony D’Apice, Alex Tate, and Wheeler Sears pieced together several clutch performances to secure a 5-1 victory. All but one of the matches went the distance (9 holes), attesting to the grit demonstrated amidst challenging circumstances (the heat and heavy wind being the most difficult to overcome!). James Rogers sunk a particularly long putt to pressure his opponent into missing what proved to be the match-turning 4-footer. In the second match of the day against Shelton, Mac McKenzie, Anashay Monga, Rex Corey, Will Rocchio, Charlie Hubbard, Jayan Joshi, Gabe Bines, and Jake Robinowitz came up just short. Rex Corey competed especially well against Shelton’s #1 golfer, Mason Dropkin, older brother of our own Dylan Dropkin. However, the dramatic 9th-hole finish went the wrong direction for Rex, as well as Jayan, as Shelton ultimately pulled out the 5-3 victory. Mac McKenzie and Charlie Hubbard had especially successful outings in defeating their opponent. In the final match, a 4v4 2-day best ball event against TCA, George Warren, Jodie Thompson, Jackson Lutz, and Will Shoup battled valiantly against TCA’s varsity reserves. The freshmen lost both foursome matches 2.5-6.5 but bounced back the next day during the second half of the match at Bent Tree Country Club. TCA had veteran varsity players on hand for this round, and yet the 4 freshmen Lions nearly tied both matches on the final hole, ultimately falling 4-5. A second group of Marksmen also competed on April 11th. Luke Piazza, Blake Broom, Rajan Joshi, John Hubbard, Trevor Crosnoe, and Dylan Dropkin squared off against Greenhill at Brookhaven Country Club’s Presidents Course. Experience once again gave the opponent an edge, but freshman Trevor Crosnoe provided a memorable highlight: tied with his opponent heading into the 9th hole, Trevor sank a knee-knocker of a putt to secure a win. Congrats to Trevor and the entire team on a week of stellar play! On Monday, the varsity golf team capped a busy week with a championship at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational hosted by Trinity Valley School at Squaw Creek in Fort Worth. Junior Romil Mathur navigated gusts of wind and quick greens en route to shooting a tournament-best 77, and teammates Mac McKenzie and Camp Collins (who was 11 over after 9 holes but battled relentlessly to shoot 1-under on the back 9) both finished with 81’s. James Rogers (89) and Tony D’Apice (85) rounded out the Marksmen top-5, whose 324 was best in a tournament field that featured all of SPC’s North Zone teams. Incredibly, the next 5 Lions finished a mere 3 strokes behind their teammates and ALSO defeated all other SPC North Zone varsity teams. Freshman Anashay Monga led the way with a 79, and fellow freshman George Warren posted an 80. Sophomore Rex Corey (83), freshman Jodie Thompson (85), and senior Alex Tate (93) combined for a 327, which proved to be a critical backup performance. In a strange turn of events, an act of honest score reporting after the round resulted in a disqualification that dropped the Lions’ top 5 into 3rd, vaulting the team’s second 5 into 1st! A third group of St. Mark’s up-and-comers also competed admirably. Freshmen Will Shoup (95), Jackson Lutz (101), Matthew Fan (101), Dylan Dropkin (104), and sophomore Luke Piazza (108) gained valuable experience in what will be the team’s final 18-hole tournament before SPC on April 29th and 30th. Congrats to the entire team on a tremendous performance!

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team played at Plano West on Tuesday, April 9. The Lions led 10-0 at the half and went on to win the game 15-3 in what was one of the best shooting games of the year so far for the Lions. Parker Clark had a ‘Golden Sombrero’ for the Lions with 4 goals, Ryan McCord had a ‘Hat Trick’ with 3 goals, Ian Mize contributed 2 goals and 2 assists, and Connor Cheetham added 1 goal and 2 assists as the Lion top scorers. The face-off foursome of John Burton, Alex Geng, Kyle Fisher, and Wyatt Autrey went 16 for 21, and goalies senior Landon Wood (9 saves) and freshman James Fults (1 save) kept the Plano West offense at bay. This week, the Lions will host Allen on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the last regular season home game.

Tennis & Water Polo
Due to the ISAS Fine Arts Festival, the varsity tennis and water polo teams did not schedule any competitions last week. They resume this week with the tennis team playing two counter games (at Ft. Worth Country Day on Tuesday and vs. Casady on Thursday) and the JV water polo team plays in the North Region JV Championships at the Keller ISD Natatorium on Saturday.
