Lion Sports Update 03/20

Baseball
Prior to spring break, the varsity baseball team traveled over to ESD for a non-counter match on Wednesday. Junior Mason Rareshide kept the Eagles’ offense at bay through four strong innings of work on the mound despite surrendering a home run to the lead-off batter in the bottom of the 4th inning. With the Lions down 0-1, junior Aaron Thorne smashed a solo home run to tie the score in the top of the 5th inning, and St. Mark’s tacked on two more runs that inning. Sophomore Daniel Sanchez took over the pitching duties, but ESD retook the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning after several Lions’ costly defensive miscues. The game ended in a 3-6 loss for St. Mark’s. The following day, the Lions hosted traditional baseball power, Dallas Christian. Senior Cole Arnett hurled five dominant innings to sophomore catcher Abe Echt as the Lions played solid defense, showing marked improvements from the previous day. Sparked by senior Jack Rocchio’s hit-by-pitch, St. Mark’s filled the bases after senior Andy Crowe’s walk and senior Connor Pierce’s excellent drag bunt. Arnett then punched a base hit to RF, plating both Rocchio and Crowe. However, the Lions were unable to hold their lead after an error, walk, and two timely Dallas Christian hits knotted the score at 2-2 and the game went to extra innings. Senior Daniel Mirochna and sophomore Jake Daniels stopped Dallas Christian’s scoring streak before the contest ended during the top of the 8th due to darkness. With a season record now standing at 1-1-2, the Varsity baseball team resumes play after Spring Break on Tuesday against THESA and Friday vs. Cistercian in its first counter match of the season.

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team traveled to Romania over spring break. The Lions trained and played in Targu Mures, NE Transylvania. In total, the St. Mark’s Polo team played 7 games against CSM Targu Mures, Universitatea Cluj-Napoca, and Partizan Targu Mures. With the exception of two games, they were all close games and heavily disputed. The Lions emerged victorious in all 7 games! This weekend, the team travels to Conroe, TX for the Maloney Invitational which will have most of the top teams in the state in attendance.

Tennis
The varsity tennis team took on ESD on March 7 in a tough, very competitive, and fun match. At line 1, sophomore Mark Motlow battled fiercely, almost taking a set off of former Marksman and junior Clark Calloway, who has already signed to play at SMU, eventually losing 6-7, 0-6. Freshman Jeremy Yu and sophomore Max Palys played their first matches for the school at lines 2 and 3 singles. They each fell just short of winning their hard-fought matches, losing 4-6, 4-6 and 6-4, 4-6, 2-10, respectively. At line 1 doubles, the senior duo of Adnan Khan and Creston Brooks had a tough battle and had to dig deep to win a 3rd set tiebreaker for a final score of 5-7, 7-5, 10-7. The line 2 doubles team of seniors Samir Rattakonda and Rhys Arana played a competitive match but eventually fell short 4-6, 1-6. The Lions play Trinity Valley on Tuesday and then open their SPC counter season with a home match against Cistercian on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Next, Seth and Pablo finished 1-2 in their race, both in huge PR's. Seth's time of 4:25.57 places him 5th on the ALL-TIME list at SM! Pablo is right behind with his time of 4:25.70. Andres finished second in his race with a huge PR of 4:30.50. Also enjoying huge PR's were junior Tyler Nussbaumer, sophomore Julian Ivarra, freshman Zach Lightfoot and junior Ben Hao.
