Lion Sports Update 03/06
Water Polo
The varsity water polo team competed in the Texas Cup at the LISD Westside Aquatics Center this past weekend. This was the team’s first tournament of the season and they were playing without 5 varsity players who were participating in the Olympic Development Program in California. St. Mark’s played 4 games in one day, a tough scenario! The first 2 games were not very challenging as the Lions easily defeated Nimitz HS (32-0) and Flower Mound (24-1). In the semifinal, the Lions faced their biggest rival in the region, Denton - Guyer HS. After trailing 2-5 in the 3rd period, the Lions fought back hard and emerged victoriously 7-6. In the Championship game, St. Mark’s faced Southlake Carroll HS. It was a close game for three periods, but in the end, the Lions demonstrated great conditioning and high quality of play, winning the game 8-2 and bringing home the Texas Cup!
Crew
The varsity crew team rowed in the Heart of Texas Regatta on March 2nd and 3rd in Austin on Lady Bird Lake. Fifteen crews raced in eight events over the two days. Seven of the crews advanced to finals with three crews placing in their events. The Varsity 2x boat bowed by junior Christian Duessel with junior Billy Lockhart in the stroke seat finished second earning a silver medal. The Varsity 4x event boat consisting of Duessel, junior Jack Trahan, sophomore Blake Hudspeth, and Lockhart also finished second for silver. The Junior Varsity 4x of junior Miles Hartley, sophomore Alexander Emery, sophomore Will Chance, and junior Taylor Hopkin finished fourth in the final being edged out of medal position by 2.1 seconds by Texas Rowing Center. Sunday’s races where met with colder temperatures and higher wind speed, but the Lions persisted. The Lightweight 2x event saw Hudspeth and Chance take the silver medal. In an event in which the Lions have only competed twice in the rowing program’s history, Christian Duessel and Billy Lockhart earned the bronze medal with a third-place finish in the Varsity 2- (pair). The early season successes of the weekend bode well for Lions Crew.
Golf
The varsity golf team started their season by participating in two tournaments. On Monday, February 25th, the Lions went to Brookhaven for Jesuit's Invitational. Juniors Camp Collins and Romil Mathur, and freshmen Anashay Monga and Mac McKenzie combined for a score of 335, good enough for 9th place out of 22 teams. Then this past weekend, the team traveled to Bastrop, Texas, for the St. John's Invitational at Wolfdancer Golf Club at Lost Pines Resort. A number of SPC teams were represented, and despite frigid temperatures that shortened the tournament, St. Mark's finished fourth overall with a score of 348. Senior James Rogers and sophomore Rex Corey joined the aforementioned foursome for this tournament. Romil Mathur shot the lowest score for the Marksmen in both events. The Lions will resume competition after spring break on March 19 at the All Saints Invitational in Fort Worth.
Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team played Austin High Maroons in the Patriot Cup this past weekend at SMU’s Ford Stadium. The Patriot Cup is an all-day lacrosse event that supports the HEADstrong Foundation and raises money for research and promotes awareness of blood cancer. St. Mark’s came out of the gates strong and led 7-1 at the end of the 1st quarter and then led 11-2 at the half. The Lions outshot the Maroons 57-15 in an offensive barrage that saw the Lions win 19-5. Senior Lyle Ochs led the Lions in scoring with 5 goals and 2 assists, senior Connor Cheetham had 2 goals and 3 assists, junior Charlie Rose had 3 goals and 2 assists, freshman Ian Mize had 2 goals and 3 assists, and senior Ryan McCord added 2 goals and 1 assists. The Lions’ offense shared the ball well, assisting on 14 of the 19 goals in the game. Senior John Burton owned the faceoff X by winning 15 or 22 faceoffs he attempted. This week, the Lions play on the road at Greenhill on Thursday and then travel to California to face three quality opponents: Bishop’s School (where Francis Donald ’03 is the Associate Director of Admissions), Cathedral Prep, and Coronado HS.
Tennis
The varsity tennis team had its only match last week canceled due to weather. They will open their season this Thursday on the road in a non-SPC counter against local foe ESD at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday’s opening game pitted the Lions against the host team, Hillcrest. Senior Daniel Mirochna led the offensive attack with two hard-hit balls that resulted in several runs for St. Mark’s. Senior Cole Arnett and sophomores Daniel Sanchez and Jake Daniels kept our team in the game on the mound until the tournament’s “drop dead” rule stopped the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied, 7-7. On Friday, St. Mark’s squared off against Dallas Lutheran. Sophomore Marlon Henderson got the Lions going with a single to right field, and the team was off to the races thereafter. Bolstered by strong pitching performances by Mirochna and senior Parker Davis, the varsity team shut-out Lutheran (10-0) in five complete innings. Fighting off cold temperatures and constant drizzle, St. Mark’s played a tough Parish Episcopal team on Saturday afternoon. The Parish starting pitcher, a Texas Tech commit, stifled the Lions bats through four innings. Behind 0-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Senior Andy Crowe ripped a ball into left center, plating two runners and sparking an inspiring comeback. However, the “drop dead” rule again stopped play although St. Mark’s did not get a chance to finish its at-bats, thus resulting in an incomplete game. The Lions return to play this week on Wednesday at ESD in a “friendly” (aka, non-counter) and Thursday at home against Dallas Christian before Spring Break hits.

This past weekend, the varsity track & field team participated in the Greenhill Relays in Addison. Under less than adequate weather conditions, the Lions came away with a team victory! The Lions were led by sophomore Kit Colson who won the 100m and 200m as well as anchoring the 2nd place 4x400 Relay team. Joining him as a two-event winner was senior Seth Weprin in the 1600m and 3200m. Junior Pablo Arroyo won the 800m and junior Garrett Davis won the Triple Jump. The 4 x 800 Relay Team also came away victorious. A slew of new Lions made their track & field debuts in many events. Overall, a very good team effort that made the sometimes very miserable weather, not so much of a factor. This week, the Lions travel to Arlington for the Volunteer Relays on Saturday, March 9.

Jake Vaughn ’17, a member of the Sewanee Men’s Lacrosse team, has seen significant minutes in the Tigers last two games, notching 2 goals against Augustana College last week.

Max Sadlowski ’16 and Garrett Mize ’18 have each played in 2 games this season for the Washington and Lee University Men’s Lacrosse team. Max, a defender, has caused 2 turnovers and gathered 1 ground ball, while Garrett has scored 4 goals on 6 shots.
