All-American Wrestler

After winning both the SPC Championship and Texas Prep State Wrestling Championship for the 138-pound weight class earlier in February, varsity wrestling captain Tucker Ribman ’18 traveled to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with Coach Reyno Arredondo ’87 to compete in the 83rd National Prep Wrestling Championships. Competing against wrestlers from 118 private and college prep schools across the country, Tucker once again showed his fight and spirit. Advancing to the quarterfinals and finishing eighth out of 32 wrestlers in his weight class, he earned All-American Honors.

Prior to the tournament, Coach Arredondo and Tucker had the opportunity to train, tour, and stay at the United States Military Academy at West Point and visit with the Army athletics staff. Prior to coaching wrestling at St. Mark’s, Lt. Col. Arredondo (Ret.) served as Associate Athletic Director of Football Operations at West Point, his alma mater, as well as serving several overseas deployments.

“Tucker has been an incredibly focused and determined young man,” Arredondo said. “Tucker leads by example in word and deed, and to see him fulfill his goal on the mat is extremely gratifying as a coach.”

The All-American Honors wrap up an incredible wrestling career at St. Mark’s for Tucker, including two SPC Championships, two Texas Prep State Championships, four Prep Nationals qualifications, and a senior season undefeated in Texas.

“St. Mark’s has taught me to set goals and achieve them,” Tucker said. “When I was a freshman, I set the goal to be a Prep Wrestling All-American. Today, I achieved that goal. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my coaches, teachers and friends who always believed in me.”

Lions Sports Update – February 28, 2018

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team started their season at the Denton ISD Spring Kick Off Tournament this past weekend. In the first game, the Lions faced Strake Jesuit (Houston, TX), one of the stronger teams in the state. The Lions won the game 11-4 and found themselves in a rematch of last year’s Public School Texas State Championship game with Flower Mound. After trailing by two goals at halftime, the Lions closed the gap and trailed 6-5 heading into the 4th quarter. The Lions defense shut out Flower Mound allowing the offense to complete the comeback with two goals of their own, securing a 7-6 victory. This Saturday, March 3, the Lions will play in the Flower Mound Tournament at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatics Center. On Sunday, March 4, the Lions will play in the Thunder Spring Invitational at the Southlake Carroll ISD Aquatics Center.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team traveled to Austin, TX last weekend to open their season. On Friday, the Lions faced SPC opponent St. Stephen’s. Many of the Lions pitched in and St. Mark’s won the game 21-3. On Saturday, the Lions played a strong opponent in Westlake. Trailing 5-1 late in the 2nd quarter, Josh Daniels ’18 scored a goal on “man up” to keep the Lions within striking distance. The Lions clawed back into the game, cutting the Westlake lead to one goal with 3:30 to play in the 4th quarter. Chasing the game, the Lions were forced to press. Westlake capitalized on a few late mistakes and ultimately won 9-5. Lions’ goal scorers included: Sam Schroeder ’18 (3), Josh Daniels ’18 (1), and Titus McGowan ’20 (1). Assisting were Colin Campbell ’20 and Garrett Mize ’18. The Lions will host the defending state champions, Jesuit, on Friday, March 2 at 7:30 pm.

The rest of the St. Mark’s spring sports will kick off their seasons this week.
