Lion Sports Update 12/05/17

Soccer
The varsity soccer team hosted Casady from Oklahoma City on Friday night. A potent Casady offense proved daunting for an inexperienced St. Mark’s defense. The Cyclones played high pressure all over the pitch forcing the Lions into poor decisions and suspect execution. Down by the three goals at halftime, St. Mark’s began the second half with their best play of the evening. Constant forays into the Cyclone penalty area paid dividends when a pinpoint cross from junior Seth Weprin was struck by sophomore William Holtby, beating the Casady goalkeeper. Several other chances were turned away by the Casady defense before a late counter-attack caught the Lions shorthanded in the back, closing the scoring at 1-4. Despite allowing four goals, solid goalkeeping from junior William Haga and sophomore Billy Lockhart kept Casady from doubling their scoring output.

Wrestling
The Varsity Wrestling team opened it’s 2017-2018 Season at the Frisco Liberty Throwdown with six freshmen (Trevor Crosnoe -106, Reid Fundis -113, Rajan Joshi -120, Cooper Ribman-132, Drew Woodward -145, and Jackson Fair -152), two sophomores (JP Noonan -IR and Charlie Rubarth -182), three juniors (Chad Kim -170, Colin Neuhoff -IR, and Gabe Bankston -220), and two seniors (Tucker Ribman -138 and Calvin Hosler -160).  The team won 17 out of 46 matches against five Texas State Public Schools, including the 2017 Texas Public School State Wrestling Runner-ups, Frisco Liberty High School. Of note, out of our 17 victories, 13 came by way of technical fall or pin. Senior standout and Harvard Commit, Tucker Ribman, pinned/technical falled all five opponents during Saturday’s matches.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team competed at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District Classic this past weekend. On Thursday night, the Lions squared off against McKinney North at Ranchview High School. Cold shooting doomed the Marksmen, and they suffered their first loss of the season. In the next 2 rounds, however, the squad bounced back with tough wins over Irving High & Grand Prairie. Sophomore Andrew Laczkowski tallied more than 50 points in the 2 games combined to lead the team in scoring. In the final game of the tournament, several SM seniors stepped up in a big way. Reece Rabin led all scorers with 20 and the team used a 50% shooting effort from behind the 3-point line to forge an early double-digit lead. But their opponent, RL Turner, made a second-half run that cut the Lions' lead to 3 with 8 seconds to play and hit a huge shot near the buzzer to force overtime and eventually win the game. St. Mark's now sits at 9-2 on the season and hosts the Anglican Church Grammar School from Brisbane, Australia on Tuesday night (7:40 pm tip) and Adamson at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Swimming
The varsity swimming team held Time Trials last Tuesday and then hosted the St. Mark’s Invite on Thursday. The Invite was not scored, but the Lions turned in many solid, early season times. The first dual meet is this Tuesday against Cistercian at 5:45 p.m.
